Radio XXXIXL, side B, track 12: “You Can’t Hurry Love” by Phil Collins

Phil Collins - You Can't Hurry LoveOh, Phil Collins, when this song came up on my play list, I knew exactly what I was going to write about.  I was going to write about “You Can’t Hurry Love”.  I know what you’re thinking, Phil Collins:  “Well, duh, of course you are, that’s this song, brainiac.”  But I’m not talking about this song, Phil Collins.  I’m talking about the movie “You Can’t Hurry Love”, a movie that I rented when I was just a lad, back when we had to not just rent the VHS tape, but also the VCR so we could play the VHS tape.

It’s not a great movie, Phil Collins, I’ll freely admit that.  And it’s SO 1988 that it should be used as a museum piece.  It’s about video dating, after all.  And praise be to the internet gods and YouTube, the whole entire movie is available to watch for free.  I haven’t watched the whole thing again, Phil Collins, but I’m planning to this weekend.  But I did watch the end of it (starting at around 1:22:00 if you care to watch yourself), because that’s where this wonderful song of yours kicks in.

It’s when our hero decides to chase down the woman he loves and him and his limo-driver buddy go speeding toward the chapel to stop the nuptials before the woman of his dreams (a young and dreamy Bridget Fonda, by the way) marries someone else.  Whether you like it or not, Phil Collins, whenever I think of this song, I immediately think of David Packer standing up in that limo banging on the roof telling his friend to drive faster, and I think of David Packer’s butt, since that is featured prominently in an earlier scene.  And I’ll also now start thinking about Kristy McNichol, lovely, beautiful Kristy McNichol, one of the women of my dreams, because I forgot she was in this, too.  And I might even start thinking of Sally Kellerman, since she sang the song that plays over the credits.

But I think the most important thing to remember, Phil Collins, is that both the song and the movie of the same name make me incredibly happy.  Because even though I now realize that the movie is pretty bad and also pretty cynical about love, your song is not, and the song represents what I thought about love and how untarnished my idea of love was back when I watched this movie for the first time and thought it was one of the most romantic movies I’d ever seen.  So maybe I WON’T go back and watch “You Can’t Hurry Love” again, and just hold my memories of it close to my heart.  But I WILL definitely listen to your song again, Phil Collins, and if you want to watch the movie, you go right on ahead:

“You Can’t Hurry Love”

I need love, love

Ooo, ta ease my mind

And I need ta find time
Someone ta call mine
My mama said
You can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
But it’s a game of give and take, you can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait

Just trust in the gooood times
No matter how
Long it takes

How many heartaches
Must I staaand

Before I find a love
To let me live again

Right now the only thing
That keeps me hangin’ on

When I feel my strength

Ooo, it’s almost gone, I remember Mama said
You can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
It’s a game of give and take
How long must I wait
How much more must I take
Before loneliness
Will cause my heart
Heart to break

Now I can’t bear
To live my life alone
I’ve grown impatient for a love
To call my own

But when I feel that I

I can’t go on

Well, these precious words
Keep me hangin’ on, I remember Mama said
You can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
But it’s a game of give and take
You can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait

Just trust in the good times
No matter how
Long it takes, and now wait

Now love, love
It don’t come easy

But I keep on waitin’
Anticipatin’
For that soft voice
To talk to me at night
For some tender arms
Hold me tight
I keep waitin’

Ooo, ’til that day
But it ain’t easy (love don’t come easy)
Ya know it ain’t easy
My mama said
You can’t hurry love
No, you’ll just have to wait
She said love don’t come easy
But it’s a game of give and take
