Radio XLVIII, side B, track 11: “Another Day In Paradise” by Phil Collins

Phil Collins - Another Day In ParadiseOh, Phil Collins, way to bring everybody down for the weekend, bro.

Just pullin’ your chain, Phil Collins, I feel like shit already, so my weekend started out crummy anyway.  Obviously this is a great song and always has been.  Plus, it was another “pure” song, and that was always exciting.  As with most of the songs that I recorded off the radio and listened to over and over and over, I never really thought too much about the message of this one.  I mean, I knew that this was a bummer of a song, but moreso because of the tempo, not necessarily the lyrics.  For one thing, I don’t know that I could really comprehend or even believe that there were situations where a woman could be just lying on the street like that.  I certainly never saw anyone who was homeless in my neck of the woods as a kid.  Some of the places people lived were barely homes, but they were still four walls and a roof.  And yeah, I remember “Stone Pillow” with Lucille Ball and all that, but I just couldn’t imagine that these were actual real problems.  Like everything else, I thought this was just something that happened on TV.

Now, of course, I realize that it’s a thing.  I live in a city with homeless people who stand on the medians of intersections and ask for help.  Until this week, I always kept some water and canned food with me to give to them if I happened to be at a stoplight where they were at.  But I’ve had people tell me they didn’t want the food because they didn’t like the brand (and this was Dinty Moore beef stew, Phil Collins, of which I grew up on and which tastes amazing over a slice of white bread), which became this awkward moment of a beggar literally being a chooser.  And this week, I gave a guy a bottle of water one evening, and the next morning at the same intersection, I saw that same bottle of water sitting there, unopened and left behind.  I know, I know, I should get over myself, but I think my money is better spent at a food bank or homeless shelter and I’ll have to rejoin the rest of the city who sit in their car and try not to make eye contact as the man or woman shuffles past with their dog-eared cardboard signs begging for help.

When my mom and her friend came to visit a few months ago, we went on one of those “duck tours”, and as our bus/boat was pulling away from the curb, I looked down from my perch to see a homeless man and/or woman lying facedown next to a trash can.  There was a part of me that wanted to stop the bus/boat and see if that person was all right.  But in the end, the bus/boat just kept going and I blew on my duck call as we crossed the street with the rest of the revelers.

So now I’ve thought about it, Phil Collins, all right?  Happy Saturday to you, too.

“Another Day In Paradise”

<awesome Phil Collins jam>

She calls out to the man on the street

“Sir, can ya help me?

It’s cold and I’ve nowhere ta sleep.

Is there somewhere you can tell me?”

He walks on

Doesn’t look back

He pretends he can’t hear her

Starts to whistle as he crosses the street

Seems embarrassed to be there

Oh

Think twice

‘Cause it’s another day for you’n me in paradise

Oh

Think twice

‘Cause it’s another day for you
You’n me in paradise

Think about it

She calls out to the man on the street

He can see she’s been crying

She’s got blisters on the soles of her feet

She can’t walk, but she’s trying

Oh

Think twice

‘Cause it’s another day for you’n me in paradise

Oh

Think twice

It’s just another day for you
You’n me in paradise

Just think about it

Oh, Lord

Is there nothing more anybody
Can do

Ohhhhh, Lord

There must be something you can saaaaaaay

You can tell from the lines on her face

You can see that she’s been there

Probably been moved on from every place

‘Cause she didn’t fit in there

Oh

Think twice

‘Cause it’s another day for you’n me in paradise

Oh

Think twice

It’s just another day for you
You’n me in paradise

Just think about it

Mmmmmm

Think about it

It’s just another day
For you and me
In paradise

It’s just another day
For you and me
In paradise
(Para)
(Paradise)
Paradise
(Another day)
(For you and me) ooo, just think about it
(In paradise)

Paradise
(Another day)
(For you and me)
