Radio XII, side B, track 5: “It’s A Sin” by Pet Shop Boys

Oh, Pet Shop Boys, I understood the hell out of this song.  As I’ve mentioned before, I attended a lot of church, so I was well aware of sin.  It was everywhere.  The Bible said it was crouching at my door.  And here’s the thing, Pet Shop Boys, I totally got most of the sin stuff.  Thou shalt not steal, honor thy father and mother, all the stuff that Moses brought down from the mountain.  I got that you shouldn’t steal or kill or stuff like that.  But then we were also taught that you could sin just by thinking stuff.  If you THOUGHT about stealing, that was a sin.  If you talked back to your parents in your head, that was a sin.  And the toughest one for me at least, if you lusted after someone in your head, it was the same as having sex with them.  Which meant, Pet Shop Boys, I sinned a LOT.  It was a no-win situation, Pet Shop Boys.  There was no difference between the thought and the deed, so when you sing about how when you look back upon your life, it’s always with a sense of shame, and how everything you’ve ever done and everything you’re going to do is a sin, totally get it Pet Shop Boys.  It’s probably even a sin to listen to this song.  Oh well.  If I’m going out, I’m going out in style.

“It’s A Sin”

When I look back upon my life

It’s always with a sense of shame

I’ve always been the one to blame

For everything I long to do

No matter when or where or who

Has one thing in common, too

It’s a, it’s a, it’s a
It’s a sin

It’s a sin

Everything I’ve ever done
Everything I ever do
Every place I’ve ever been
Everywhere I’m going to

It’s a sin

At school they taught me how to be

So pure in thought and word and deed

They didn’t quite succeed

For everything I long to do

No matter when or where or who

Has one thing in common, too

It’s a, it’s a, it’s a
It’s a sin

It’s a sin

Everything I’ve ever done
Everything I ever do
Every place I’ve ever been
Everywhere I’m going to

It’s a sin

Father, forgive me

I tried not to do it

Turned over a new leaf

Then tore right through it

Whatever you taught me

I didn’t believe it

Father, you fought me
‘Cause I didn’t care
And I still don’t
Understand

So I look back upon my life

Forever with a sense of shame

I’ve always been the one to blame

For everything I long to do

No matter when or where or who

Has one thing in common, too

It’s a, it’s a, it’s a
It’s a sin

It’s a sin

Everything I’ve ever done
Everything I ever do
Every place I’ve ever been
Everywhere I’m going to

It’s a sin

<awesome Pet Shop Boys jam>

It’s a, it’s a, it’s a

It’s a sin

It’s a, it’s a, it’s a

It’s a sin

Oh Starstorm, I love your blog so very much! You just say it like it is! God, I’ve not heard this song in so long. The Petshop Boys are kind of weird. They have such a huge following, they really do. You know many of the fans would turn up to their gigs dressed in their weird costumes? I sort of like sort of really, really hate the Petshop Boys. They have a few songs that are just brilliant. For one, ‘Westend Girls’, but there’s something odd about them. Lol. I love this review! 🙂

Such strong sentiments about Pet Shop Boys, katykins! 🙂 Glad you liked the post. I hadn’t heard this one in forever, either, totally forgot about it until I pushed play and was like “Oh yeah!!! I remember this one!” I love those moments.
