Radio XVII, side B, track 11: “Domino Dancing” by Pet Shop Boys

Domino Dancing - Pet Shop BoysOh, Pet Shop Boys, to this day I’m not sure exactly what “domino dancing” entails.  Is it akin to The Locomotion, i.e. an actual dance move, like say, “Hey, everybody, let’s go Domino Dancing!!!”  Or is it a metaphor for your true love’s betrayal?  I have this picture in my head of you creating this elaborate domino structure in the shape of a heart that takes a week to put together, and then you light some candles and put on this song and then watch them all fall down.  Very artsy, Pet Shop Boys.  The thing is, though, I could never completely buy in to the somber, lovelorn mood of this particular song, because to me, dominoes were always the sign of a good time.  I had some Disney-themed dominoes when I was a kid, and I played with them all the time, coming up with elaborate (elaborate for me, anyway) designs and then watching them all collapse against each other.  And if it wasn’t my own dominoes, it was my grandpa and grandma’s dominoes.

I had many a fun time playing dominoes with my Grandpa and Grandma Johnson.  To this day I can still hear the sound of those black-with-white spotted dominoes cluttering around in that plastic orange-and-pink Blue Bunny ice cream bucket just before Grandpa let them fly all over that old Formica-and-silver kitchen table.  Plus their smell, which I could only classify as “Grandpa and Grandma’s dominoes”.  Funny thing, Pet Shop Boys, I can’t for the life of me remember how to play dominoes anymore.  I need to get on that.  I don’t know that reminding a guy of playing dominoes with his grandparents was what you were hoping to accomplish with this song, Pet Shop Boys, but I appreciate that that’s what you’ve done.

“Domino Dancing”

All day, all day

<awesome Pet Shop Boys intro>

I don’t know why
I don’t know how
Thought I loved you, but
I’m not sure now
Seen you look at strangers too many times
Love you want is of a
A different kind

Remember when
We felt the sun
A love like paradise
How hot it burned
Threat of distant thunder
The sky was red
And when you walked, you always turned every head

(All day, all day) Watch them all fall down
(All day, all day) Domino dancing
(All day, all day) Watch them all fall down
(All day, all day) Domino dancing

<awesome Pet Shop Boys jam>

Thought that when we fought
I was to blame
Now I know you play
A different game
I’ve watched you dance with danger, still wanting more
Add another number
To the score

(All day, all day) Watch them all fall down
(All day, all day) Domino dancing
(All day, all day) Watch them all fall down
(All day, all day) Domino dancing

When you look around you wonder
Do you play to win?
Or are you just a bad loser?

<awesome Pet Shop Boys jam>

(All day, all day)

(All day, all day)

I don’t know why
I don’t know how
Thought I loved you, but
I’m not sure now
Hear the thunder crashing, the sky is dark
And now a storm is breaking within my heart

(All day, all day) Watch them all fall down
(All day, all day) Domino dancing
(All day, all day) Watch them all fall down
(All day, all day) Domino dancing
(All day, all day) Watch them all fall down
(All day, all day) Domino dancing
(All day, all day) Watch them all fall down
(All day, all day) Domino dancing
(All day, all day) Watch them all fall down
(All day, all day) Domino dancing
(All day, all day) Watch them all fall down
(All day, all day)

You know that hardcore Pet Shop Boys fans used to go to their gigs dressed in their weird costumes? Really bizarre! Did you say recently you’re a ‘Hunger Games’ fan? Sorry, was maybe just ‘Twilight’, but when I went to see it at the cinema, the guards wearing the big white hats made me burst out laughing as I was reminded of the PSBs! Ha ha!

I love playing dominoes. This is a cool memory you’ve shared with us. 🙂
