Radio XXI, side A, track 9: “Never Tear Us Apart” by INXS, #59 on The Top 88 of ’88

Radio XXI Never Tear Us Apart - INXSOh, INXS, as I’ve intimated previously, even though I’m a heterosexual man-boy, I don’t know that my heterosexualness would be able to withstand the power of this song were it to be directed my way.  Luckily, since there’s no chance you’d ever sing this song directly to me, INXS, my masculinity and/or sexuality remains firmly intact (such as it is).  But let’s talk about this song for a second.  Yes, it’s an amazing song, and yes, it deserves to be on this year-end countdown and probably deserves to be higher.  But this is one of those songs that epitomizes why I was always annoyed by the artsy guys in college.  Because the artsy guys could easily score the artsy girls, and unfortunately for me, I also liked artsy girls, and doubly unfortunately for me, I didn’t have any artsy skills, unless you count writing the occasional derivative comic-book script, and believe you me, INXS, artsy girls didn’t count that.

Anyway, the point is, INXS, is that these are the kinds of songs that the artsy guys would play for all the artsy girls (because of course they always had a guitar on them), or maybe they’d write it in a poem, and they’d be so INTENSE and broody, and oh did the artsy girls LOOOVE that.  I was also intense and broody, INXS, but again, I lacked any talent besides collecting stray animals, none of which could sing or write poetry.

Maybe I should have at least given it a go, gone to some open mike nights and read some bad poetry, because that’s the thing, INXS, it’s not like any of these guys were really paying attention to what they were saying.  Take you guys, for example.  One of your lyrics is “But if I hurt you, I’d make wine from your tears.”  I can just imagine the swoons that that line would have caused on campus, INXS.  And yeah, it sounds real poetic.  But let’s stop and think about it for a second, INXS.  Making wine from somebody’s tears?  Which implies that at some point you’re planning on drinking it, and likely sharing it with whoever provided the tears in the first place.  That’s just gross.  And also why I can’t be a poet.

“Never Tear Us Apart”

Don’t ask me

What you know is true

Don’t have to tell you

I love your precious heart

I

I was standin’

You were there

Two worlds collided

And they could never tear us apart

<awesome INXS jam>

We could live

For a thousand years

But if I hurt you

I’d make wine
From your tears

I told you

That we could fly

‘Cause we all have wings

But some of us
Don’t know whyyyyy

I was standin’

You were there

Two worlds collided

And they could never
Ever
Tear us apart

<awesome INXS jam>

I (don’t ask me)
I was standin’ (you know it’s true)
Mm, you were there (worlds collided)
Two worlds collided (we’re shining through)
And they could never tear us apart

You (don’t ask me)
You were standin’ (you know it’s true)
I was there (worlds collided)
Two worlds collided (we’re shining through)
