Radio XXIXXX, side B, track 1: “You Give Love A Bad Name” by Bon Jovi

Bon Jovi - You Give Love A Bad NameOh, Bon Jovi, no matter what song you ever sing, no matter that “Bad Medicine” is actually my favorite of all your songs, whenever I hear “Bon Jovi” uttered, the first thought in my head is always the first words to this song.  This more than any of your many wonderful songs is quintessential Bon Jovi, and considering that every Bon Jovi song is quintessential Bon Jovi, that’s saying something.  It just perfectly sums up everything about being an angry teenager who’s getting dicked around (probably literally) by a manipulative, irresistible woman.  It’s angry and it’s violent, but it’s not angry and violent in a creepy way or a make the parents nervous way, it’s just good old-fashioned teenager screaming in his room anger.

I had plenty of that anger growing up, Bon Jovi.  Unfortunately, any anger directed at any girls was never because they’d actually led me down the garden path, if you will.  I would have LOVED to be able to sing “your very first kiss was your first kiss good-bye”.  Because that would have meant someone was kissing me in the first place.  To be honest, Bon Jovi, this song kind of sounded like a champagne problem to me.  This girl sounded hot, and being a prisoner of passion didn’t sound like such a bad thing.  Maybe look at the bright side that you got to snuggle with her in the first place, huh, Bon Jovi?

Oh, don’t look at me like that, Bon Jovi, I get it now, of course.  I was a late bloomer, so most of my teenage angst didn’t hit until college and then I had plenty of romantic dramas and plenty of times where I felt like I’d been shot through the heart and she was to blame.  Of course, my reaction wasn’t always good ol’ Bon Jovi rage.  Sometimes it was more like a sad summer rain brought to you by The Jets.

But regardless of all that, what I appreciate the most about this song is that you got shot through the heart and rather than screaming for an ambulance, you just got thoroughly pissed off about it.  That is bad-ass, Bon Jovi.

“You Give Love A Bad Name”

Shot through the heart
And you’re to blame
Darlin’, you give love
A bad name

<awesome Bon Jovi jam>

An angel’s smile
Is what you sell
You promised me heaven then put me through hell
Chains of love
Got a hold on me
When passion’s a prison you can’t break free

Whoa-oh-oh, you’re a loaded gun
Yeah

Whoa-oh-oh, there’s nowhere to run
No one can save me, the damage is done

Shot through the heart
And you’re to blame
You give love
A bad name (bad name)
I play my part
And you play your game
You give love
A bad name (bad name)
Yeah, you give loooove

Bad name

Paint your smile
On your lips
Blood-red nails on your fingertips
A schoolboy’s dream
You act so shy
Your very first kiss was your first kiss good-bye

Whoa-oh-oh, you’re a loaded gun

Whoa-oh-oh
There’s nowhere to run
No one can save me, the damage is done

Shot through the heart
And you’re to blame
You give love
A bad name (bad name)
I play my part
And you play your game
You give love
A bad name (bad name)
You give looove, ah!

<awesome Bon Jovi jam>

Ohhhhh, shot through the heart
And you’re to blame
You give love
A bad name

I play my part
And you play your game
You give love
A bad name (bad name)
Shot through the heart
And you’re to blame
You give love
A bad name (bad name)
I play my part
And you play your game
You give love
A bad name (bad name)
You give love
(Whooooooooooooooooa)
You give love (Whoooooooooooa)
(Bad name)
You give love (Whooooooooooa)
You give looove (Whooooooooa)
(Bad name)
You give love (Whoooooooooa)
You give love

  1. […] don’t I?), I feel like I already said all I had to say about why I love this song so much last time it came up on the track list.  So why belabor the point, when all that would do is take more seconds away from all of us […]
