Radio XLI, side A, track 2: “Start Me Up” by The Rolling Stones

The Rolling Stones - Start Me UpOh, The Rolling Stones, so if that song I taped of Aretha Franklin’s is about sex, then this song is DEFINITELY about sex.  Not like I’m making a big leap here, The Rolling Stones, since I’m pretty sure every song you ever made is about sex.  We could spend time analyzing what it means about you “blowing your top” and “sliding it up”, but even as a kid when I first recorded this off the radio, pretty sure even little ol’ me figured out what you were singing about.  But there’s one particular lyric that I absolutely missed when I was a kid and when I heard it this time, I did a double-take:  “You make a dead man come.”   Ummmm, holy shit, The Rolling Stones.

Please explain to me how radio stations decided what and what not to censor.  We already talked about how the powers-that-be thought “screwed” was too risque for the radio, but necrophilia is totally okay?  Don’t get me wrong, The Rolling Stones, if you’re trying to really make it clear that this woman is the sexiest woman to ever exist, I can’t think of any other lyric that could convey that as strongly.  Or as disturbingly.  Or as ickily.  My only regret about this song is that I did totally miss that lyric as a kid, because I guarantee you that it would have been the source of gleeful conversation amongst me and my friends on the bus ride to school for weeks on end.

“Start Me Up”

<awesome The Rolling Stones jam>

If ya start me up

If ya start me up I’ll never stop

If ya start me up

If ya start me up I’ll never stop

I been runnin’ hot

Ya got me lucky I don’t blow my top

If ya start me up

If ya start me up I’ll never stop, never stop, never stop, never stop

You make a grown man cryyyyyy

You make a grown man cryyyyyy

You make a grown man cryyyyyy

Spread out the oil
The gasoline
I walk in smooth, ride in a meeeean
Meeeeeean machiiiiiiiine, start it up

Start it up

Kick on the starter, give it all you got
You got
You got

I can’t compete

With the riders in the other heats

If you rough it up

If you like it you can slide it up, slide it up, slide it up, slide it up

Don’t make a grown man cryyyyy

Don’t make a grown man cryyyyy

Don’t make a grown man cryyyyy

My eyes dilate

My lips go green

My hands are greasy, she’s a meeeean, meeeean machiiiiine, start it up

Start me up

Ahhhhhh, give it all you got

You got to never, never, never stop
Slide it up (woo)

Oh, baby, just slide it up
Slide it up, slide it up, never, never, never

You make a grown man cryyyyy

You make a grown man cryyyyy

You make a grown man cryyyyy

Ride like the wind
At double speed

I’ll take you places thatcha neeever, neeever seeeeeeeen, yeeeeeah

Start it up

Love the day when we will never stop, never stop, never, never, never stop

Tough me up

Never stop, never stop

You, you

You make a grown man cryyyyyyy

You

You make a dead man coooome

You, you
