Radio XLIII, side B, track 2: “Mixed Emotions” by The Rolling Stones

Rolling Stones - Mixed EmotionsOh, The Rolling Stones, I have a bit of a confession to make.  I’m not one of your biggest fans.  It’s not that I don’t like your music or anything, it’s just that I’ve never been completely knocked out by your music like pretty much everyone else is.  I have a deep respect for both your music and your longevity, but in general your music just hasn’t been able to start me up (see what I did there?).  Having said all that, I do feel a stronger kinship with the music  from your “Steel Wheels” album that was playing on the radio at the time, like this particular tune.  I think I just bonded with those songs because I felt more like those songs were “mine”.  They came out at the height of my radio-taping days, and I felt like I was on the cutting edge of coolness because I was listening to the newest Rolling Stones music right as it was coming out.  Before “Mixed Emotions”, I saw you guys as an “old” band who’d made music before I’d really gotten into music.  With this song, I felt like I was “in” with you and not just some young punk with no reverence for your historical significance in rock and roll history.  This song marked a turning point in our relationship, The Rolling Stones, where my respect for you evolved from grudging to sincere.  Can’t wait to get re-acquainted with more of your songs, fellas.

“Mixed Emotions”

Button yo lip, baby

Button yo coat

Let’s go out dancin’

Go for the throat

Let’s bury the hatchet

Wipe out the past

Make love together

Stay on the path

You’re not the only one

With mixed emotions

You’re not the only ship

Adrift on this ocean

This comin’ and goin’

Is drivin’ me nuts

This to-in’ and fro-in’

Is hurtin’ my guts

Get off the fence, now

It’s creasin’ yo butt

Life is a party

Let’s get out and strut, yes

You’re not the only one

With mixed emotions

You’re not the only ship

Adrift on this ocean

You’re not the only one

That’s feelin’ lonesome

You’re not the only one

With mixed emoooooooooootiooons

Yoooou’re not the ooooonly ooooone

Yoooou’re not the ooooonly ooooooooooone

<awesome The Rolling Stones jam>

Let’s grab the wooooorld

By the scruff’a the neeeeck

And drink it down deeply

And love it ta death

So button yo lip, baby

Button yo coat

Let’s go out dancin’

Let’s rock ‘n’ roll, yeah

You’re not the only one

With mixed emotions

And you’re not the only ship

Adrift on this ocean

You’re not the only one (only one)

That’s feelin’ lonesome

You’re not the only one

With mixed emooooooootiooooons

Mixed emooooooootiooooooons

<awesome The Rolling Stones jam>

You’re not the only one

You’re not the only on
Gonna stick
Keep it together, yeah
You’re not the only one
Ya better stick
Stick

Stick together
You’re not the only one

  1. I have to say that I’m not a big Stones fan either. A lot of people I’ve met who are into the Stones like them because, “They’re the Stones, man!” It seems like more of a branding thing than a music think.

Like you, though, I have my favorites from them.
