Radio XLVII, side A, track 2: “Ghostbusters” by Run-DMC

Run DMC - GhostbustersOh, Run-DMC, you’ve got your work cut out for you trying to one-up the original “Ghostbusters” theme song.  Did you succeed?  Well, I think there’s way too much goodwill for the first movie and the first song for anything to really be able to be “better”, but this is still a great damn song, Run-DMC.

I very fondly remember this song, just as I fondly remember “Ghostbusters II”.  I haven’t heard this song in years, but I knew that this song was coming up next on the track list and as I was thinking about it I found myself randomly rapping snippets of this one, like “I I I I remember the time, I visited the grave” and “that go bump in the niiiight”.  There’s a lot happening in this one, Run-DMC.  We’ve got a sped-up version of the original chorus, we’ve got people shouting “Ghostbusters!”, we’ve got random rapping, we’ve got the Ecto-1 siren.  I won’t lie, it kinda feels like a song produced by committee.  When I was listening to it, I felt like I do when I walk into Pinballz pinball arcade.  There’s so much going on, it’s hard to figure out what to focus on first.  It’s a little overwhelming.

But at the end of the day, the most important thing about a song like this is if it gives you fond memories of the movie that it’s referencing, which it totally does.  Plus it makes me want to be a Ghostbuster even more than ever, and that’s saying something, since I’ve always wanted to be a Ghostbuster, even though regardless of the amount of times I’ve sung “I ain’t afraid’a no ghost”, I’m absolutely terrified of ghosts.

“Ghostbusters”

<awesome Run-DMC jam>

Ghostbusters!

I ain’t afraid’a no ghost

I ain’t afraid’a no ghost

I ain’t afraid’a no ghost
Ghostbusters!

Somethin’ strange goin’ on
Something’s wrong

Gloom in the room
Outside is the storm

All alone in the crib
Watchin’ the tube

Yo, is that what I think
Did I see somethin’ move

Chill down ya spine
Ya heart fills with fright
Not filled by the things that go bump in the niiight

They walk through the walls
With no time ta stall
You call the Ghostbusters
Well, that’s who you call!
Ghostbusters!
We ain’t, we ain’t, we, we ain’t afraid’a no ghost
Ghostbusters!
We ain’t, we ain’t, we, we ain’t afraid’a no ghost
Ghostbusters!
We ain’t, we ain’t, we, we ain’t afraid’a no ghost
Ghostbusters!

Stop!
Uh!
Bridge!
Hit it!

<awesome Run-DMC jam>

Ghostbusters!

Ghostbusters!

All alone on the phone
So wassup with that noise
The wife’s at work and I’m no jerk and I just left my boys
The kids at school and I’m no fool and I got no time ta waste
So ya get up and call, don’t trip and fall (Ghostbusters!)
Go outside and leave the place
Now it’s no dream because yo seein’ a shadow in the night
But we will come and get it done so don’t worry, save ya fright

Now there’s a group who likes ta troop and you know you can trust us
So don’t get nervous ’cause at ya service the local Ghostbusters!

I ain’t afraid’a no ghost
I ain’t, I ain’t afraid’a no ghost
I ain’t, I ain’t afraid’a no ghost
Ghostbusters!

I ain’t afraid’a no ghost
I ain’t, I ain’t afraid’a no ghost
I ain’t, I ain’t afraid’a no ghost
Ghostbusters!
I I I I remember the time
I visited the grave
My life on the line
Only my life ta save

All by myself
With no one around
Did not understand a hand comin’ out the ground

I knew it wasn’t mine, it was somebody else

But I didn’t care, G
I just screamed fo help

Then

Ghostbusters!
Had shot through the back
Screamin’

Ghostbusters!
Those ‘busters attacked
“We are your friendly neighborhood Ghostbusters”
That’s what they said ta me
“We are the busters of any”
“G-H-O-S-T”
Ghostbusters!
I ain’t, I ain’t, I ain’t, I ain’t afraid’a no ghost
Ghostbusters!
I ain’t, I ain’t, I ain’t, I ain’t afraid’a no ghost

Howling, haunting, scaring, screaming
Ghostly ghosts
Ghoul and demons
Monsters, spooks
Werewolves and goblins
All those things
On the same level

Nightmares
Bad dreams
Can be beat

It takes a brave man to stand and defeat

Must be the bravest, yo, the bravest utmost

Ya must be able ta say, “I ain’t afraid’a no ghost”

A good sense’a humor is important ta have

When a ghost tries ta scare you
Ha, you don’t make me laugh
They be dustin’ off ghosts
Like true ghost-dusters

Go, go, go, go, Ghoooooostbusters!
Ghostbusters!
Busters, busters
One time in da house
Peace ta everybody out there
We love ya

Peace

I ain’t afraid’a no ghost

  1. Oh man, I picked this soundtrack up on cassette at a thrift store… easily one of the worst collections of music ever assembled… I mean, TWO tracks from Bobby Brown… ooff… Yeah, that span from 1987 to 1991 is just a no man’s land of awful drum machines and awful lyrics. But I do love Ghostbusters, and the Run DMC track is the belle of the ball here for sure.

Just to warn you, there’s more “Ghostbusters II” music coming up, plus at some point the soundtrack to “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” became popular, so your ears might be in for some pain 🙂
