Radio XLVII, side B, track 1: “Just Like Jesse James” by Cher

Cher - Just Like Jesse JamesOh, Cher, this song had me scrambling all over the internet learning about history.  We’ll get the preliminaries out of the way:  this song is fantastic.  I always thought you were great, Cher, but I don’t think it’s been ’til I started this project that I’ve really appreciated just how amazing your voice is.  And this song is just another example of you singing songs that I can’t help but sing along to.

But as with a lot of songs that I’ve rediscovered on the blog, I realized there were lyrics that I didn’t remember or that I’d never given much thought to.  Like the line about your heart crying “Indian”.  Which I’m assuming is similar to “crying uncle”.  Which means you’re giving up.  Which I don’t know if that means by implication Indians are wont to give up or what.  That’s what it seems to me.  Which seems kinda racist.  I mean, I know you’re part Cherokee and all, but still, maybe there’s a different way to highlight the Wild West motif you were going for?

And then I needed to look up stuff on Jesse James, because I wanted to know if he really did go down in flames.  Turns out no, he was shot in the back of the head, but that doesn’t really rhyme with Jesse James.  This is in no way a criticism of you, Cher, but it’s always astounded me how the most awful things can become innocuous subjects for entertainment purposes.  Hell, Billy Joel made every tragedy in the last half of the 20th century sound downright catchy.  And here’s a song that features a guy that was involved in a couple of massacres and died a violent death.  And now he’s in a pop song about having hot sex with Cher.  Well, that’s what I took away from this song, anyway, Cher.  If I were smarter and/or had the kind of time, I could probably start a whole blog about the use of atrocities in entertainment.  But I’m not smarter, I don’t have that kind of time, and frankly, who the hell wants to read that?

So let’s just agree that you make amazing music, Cher, and thank you for broadening my mind much further than I would have guessed before I hit the “Play” button on this one.

“Just Like Jesse James”

<awesome Cher jam>

Ya struttin’ inta town like ya slingin’ a gun
Just a small town dude with a big city attitude

Honey, are ya lookin’ fo some trouble tonight
Well, aaall right

Ya think you’re so bad, drive the womenfolk wild
Shoot ’em all down with the flash’a ya pearly smile
Honey, butchoo meeetcha match tonight

Oh, that’s right
Ya think you’ll knock me off my feet ’til I’m flat on the floor
‘Til my heart is cryin’ “Indian” and I’m beggin’ for more
So come on, baby
Come on, baby
Come on, baby, show me what that loaded gun is fo, if you can give it
I can take it
‘Cause if this heart is gonna break it’s gonna take a lot ta break it

‘Cause I know
Tonight
Somebody’s gonna win the fight, so if ya so tough
Come on and prove it
Ya heart is down for the count and ya know yo gonna lose it
Tonight yo gonna go down in flaaaames
Just like Jesse Jaaames

You’re an outlaw lover and I’m after ya hide
Well, ya ain’t so strong, won’t be long ’til ya hands’a tied
Tonight I’m gonna take you in dead or alive
Thaaaat’s right

Break the laws’a love in the name’a desire
Take ten steps back ’cause I’m ready, baby, aim and fiiire
Baby, there’s no way you gonna run tonight
Ooo, thaaat’s right

Well, ya had your way with love but it’s the end of the day
Now a team’a wild horses couldn’t tear yo heart away, so come on, baby
Come on, baby
Come on, baby, you know there ain’t nothin’ left ta say, if you can give it
I can take it
‘Cause if this heart is gonna break it’s gonna take a lot ta break it

I know
Tonight
Somebody’s gonna win the fight, so if ya so tough
Come on and prove it
Ya heart is down for the count and ya know yo gonna lose it
Tonight yo gonna go down in flaaaames
Just like Jesse Jaaames

<awesome Cher jam>

Ya think you’ll knock me off my feet ’til I’m flat on the floor
‘Til my heart is cryin’ “Indian” and I’m beggin’ for more
So come on, baby
Come on, baby
Come on, baby, come ooooooooooooon, if you can give it
I can take it
‘Cause if this heart is gonna break it’s gonna take a lot ta break it

I know
Tonight
Somebody’s gonna win the fight, so if ya so tough
Come on and prove it
Ya heart is down for the count and ya know yo gonna lose it
Tonight ya gonna go down in flaaaames
Just like Jesse Jaaames
Tonight yo gonna go down in flaaaames
Just like Jesse Jaaames
Tonight yo gonna go down in flaaaames
Just like Jesse Jaaaaaaaaames

I’m gonna shoot ya down, Jesse Jaaames
