Radio XLVII, side B, track 4: “Love Song” by Tesla

Tesla - Love SongOh, Tesla, from the first moment I heard this song and heard your name, I thought you guys were fancy.  You had a different sound than most of the other hard rock bands I was hearing on the radio, plus your name didn’t have an obvious hard rock name, like Poison or Skid Row.  Your name sounded exotic and deep, like you knew something beyond what the rest of the bands out there knew.

I don’t know if any of that’s true, Tesla, but you guys sure knew how to rock.  And it wasn’t until very recently that I learned about your namesake, Nikola Tesla.  Which, by the way, naming your band after the father of electricity, nicely done.  I had no idea who Tesla was until I was at a party with my wife before she was my wife, and we were sitting around playing I think Apples To Apples (which, by the way, I very rarely go out to parties and every time I do, that’s the game that gets pulled out.  I enjoy playing it, I’m just not sure why it seems to follow me around wherever I go.) and for some reason, Thomas Edison came up, and one of the party attendees went on a long tirade about how much of an asshole Thomas Edison was.  Like, he was really angry about the guy.  I’d never given Thomas Edison a second thought.  He seemed like an innocuous genius inventor, certainly not someone who invited controversy.

But just like that Apples To Apples game, after the party I couldn’t get away from the Thomas Edison controversy.  Whether online or random conversations, suddenly I kept hearing about how Thomas Edison was a colossal douchebag and at some point Nikola Tesla entered into the equation and I discovered there was this huge movement of those who worshiped Tesla and spat upon Edison.  If they make stickers of Calvin peeing on Edison (which, by the way, that whole Calvin peeing on things?  I’m morally opposed to it), these people would buy them in bulk and place them on theirs and others’ cars.  I can’t say that I know enough about the whole thing to say I’m close to an expert, but Edison does seem like he was a dick, and it does seem like he screwed over your namesake.  Plus he electrocuted an elephant, which just pisses me off.

When all is said and done, and from my limited knowledge, Nikola Tesla seems like a tragic genius who was largely forgotten by history while Elephant-Killer Edison got all the cred.  So I dedicate this aptly-named song by an aptly-named band to all those passionate Tesla fans out there, both of the band and of the man.  Love is indeed all around you.  Just like electricity.
