Radio L, side A, track 4: “Opposites Attract” by Paula Abdul

Paula Abdul - Opposites AttractOh, Paula Abdul, this is a good time to talk about my love of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”.  I mentioned it way, way back, but I don’t think I ever really conveyed to you my overwhelming obsession with that movie, Paula Abdul.  From the moment I caught the first preview on a TV commercial, I ate, slept, and breathed Toontown.  My mind was enthralled with the idea of cartoon characters being real.  I still remember distinctly seeing a commercial with that shot of Donald Duck playing the piano and seeing his reflection on the top of the piano and how REAL it looked.  I taped the “making of” special that was on CBS (oh yes, Paula Abdul, I also did a lot of taping off of the TV.  I really should have bought stock in Memorex and Sony) and I watched that special about a thousand times.  I snuck my dad’s issue of Newsweek that featured the movie on the cover and read the article about it over and over.  I collected Roger Rabbit collector cards and stickers.  I became obsessed with Bob Hoskins (which I’m unapologetic for, since he was an amazing actor.  R.I.P., Mr. Hoskins).  All this even before I’d ever seen the movie.  I was able to convince my mom to drive me to Pipestone to go see it while she went shopping at Shopko, and it was just as amazing as I could have imagined.  And of course when it came out on video, I wore that tape out.  That movie even helped me pass a few college classes because since I knew pretty much everything there was to know about “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?”, I did presentations on it for random projects.  I haven’t watched it as often these last several years, but I do have the DVD and I have listened to the commentary and every time I watch it I’m mesmerized.

Maybe you’re wondering what the hell any of this has to do with you, Paula Abdul, but I think you know.  MC Skat Kat, of course.  Even though we didn’t have MTV, I was able to see the video for this one, and of course I was in love with it because once again it featured humans and cartoons interacting.  Maybe not as seamlessly as “Roger Rabbit”, but any port in a storm.  I’m pretty confident that I recorded this song again, Paula Abdul, so we’ll delve into just what it was that had me so obsessed with the idea of cartoon characters interacting with humans another time.  Thanks for reminding me that it’s time to get re-acquainted with Roger, Eddie, Jessica, Baby Herman, and the rest of the gang again.

“Opposites Attract”

<awesome Paula Abdul jam>

Baby, seems we never
Ever agree

You like the movies
And I like TV

I take things serious and you take ’em light
I go ta bed early and I party all night

Our friends are sayin’
We ain’t gonna last

‘Cause I move slowly
And baby, I’m fast

I like it quiet
And I love to shout
But when we get together it just all works out
I take
Two steps forward
I take two steps back

We come together ’cause opposites attract, and ya know
It ain’t fiction, just a natural faaaact

We come together ’cause opp-osites attract

Who’d’a thought
We could be lovers
She makes the bed
And he steals the covers
She likes it neat
And he makes a mess

I take it easy, baby, I get obseeessed

She’s got the money
And he’s always broke

I don’t like cigarettes
I like ta smooooke

Things in common
There just ain’t a one
But when we get together we have nothin’ but fun

I take
Two steps forward
I take two steps back

We come together ’cause opposites attract, and ya know
It ain’t fiction, just a natural faaaact

We come together ’cause opp-osites attract

Ya know it

Baby
Baaaaby

We come together

Baby, ain’t it somethin’ how we lasted this long

You and me provin’ everyone wrong

Don’t think we’ll ever get our differences patched

Don’t really matter, ’cause we’re perfectly matched

I take
Two steps forward
I take two steps back

We come together ’cause opposites attract, and ya know
It ain’t fiction, just a natural faaaact

We come together ’cause opp-osites attract

A’two steps forward
A’two steps back (two steps back)
We come together
‘Cause opposites attract

It ain’t fiction
Ya know it’s a faaact (two steps back)
We come together
Opposites
Opposites

A’two steps forward

A’two steps back

A’two steps back
Opposites attract

We go together

Go together

Opposites attract

A’two steps forward

A’two steps back

A’two steps back

Opposites attract

Go together

Go together
