Radio L, side A, track 5: “This One’s For The Children” by New Kids On The Block

NKOTB - This One's For The ChildrenOh, New Kids On The Block, I owe you an apology.  I gave you guys quite a lot of shit about this song last time it showed up on my track list.  Said a lot of things about how obvious this song was and how silly it was to think that your audience would be shocked to hear that there were people in this world who were sad and/or hungry.  Of course, I was writing that from the perspective of a jaded, flabby man approaching middle age.  Totally forgot that when I was recording these songs off the radio I was still a wide-eyed optimist with a metabolism straight from the gods.  Clearly, the message of your song resonated deeply with me, hence me recording this one again.

So while I can sit here from the comfort of 2015 and shake my head at how obvious your message was, back in 1989, this song was likely as deep as an ocean for me.  And you know what, at the time, it probably was pretty hard for me to comprehend that there were really children starving.  I mean, I’m sure I saw the Sally Struthers commercials and I’m pretty sure our church would send money to a random country in Africa now and again, but it was still hard to think about anyone going to bed hungry when you not only had a refrigerator but also two freezers and cupboards jammed with food (don’t forget, New Kids On The Block, I lived in Minnesota, so one must always be stocked up for any surprise blizzards).  Not only that, but I lived on a farm, so I could literally go outside and grab food from the garden or grab some sweet corn from out in the field or go to the barn and get a jug of milk.  Food was EVERYWHERE.

Food is STILL everywhere.  If I was still eating meat, I could get a burger for a buck at Mickey D’s.  Taco Bell has all kinds of shit (and I do mean that literally) for cheap.  Or there’s always ramen.  I get that none of these are ideal or healthy choices, New Kids On The Block, and my physique can attest to that, but my point is that there is food all over the damn place.  The two biggest failures of the human race, in my humble opinion, is that we have yet to master renewable energy and that we haven’t figured out a way to distribute food so that people aren’t starving to death.  The fact that both these things are still issues in this day and age is kind of appalling, really.

Look at that, New Kids On The Block.  Your song made me contemplate the plight of starving children in the world.  Well played.  Literally.

“This One’s For The Children”

This a very serious message

So all of you
Please listen

<awesome NKOTB jam>

There are some people
Living in this world

They have no food ta eat
They have no place to go

But we all are God’s children
We have ta learn ta love one another

Just remember they could be us
Remember we all are brothers

I’m not tryin’

Ta darken up ya day

But help
Others in need
Show them there’s a better way

This one’s fo the children

The children of the world

This one’s fo the childreeen

May God keep them
In His throne

Oooooooooo

Many people’a happy

And many people’a sad

Some people have many things
That others can only wish they had

So for the sake of the children
Show them love’s the only way ta go

‘Cause they’re our tomorrow

And people they got to know

I’m not tryin’

Ta darken up ya day

But help
Others in need
Show them there’s a better way

This one’s fo the children (aaaahhhhhhhhh)
The children of the world (aaaahhhhhhhhh)
This one’s fo the childreeen (aaaahhhhhhhhh)
May God keep them
In His throne

This one’s fo the children (aaaahhhhhhhhh)
The children ooooof the world (aaaahhhhhhhhh)
This one’s fo the childreeen (aaaahhhhhhhhh)
May God keep them
In His throne
(This one’s)

(For the children) only for the children
Children of the world
(This one’s)

(For the children) oohhhhhhhh

(This one’s)
Only for the children
(For the children)

(This one’s)

(For the children)

(This one’s) Many people’a happy, many people’a sad
(For the children)
This one’s for the childreeeeen
(This one’s)

(For the children)
