Radio L, side B, track 2: “No Myth” by Michael Penn

Michael Penn - No MythOh, Michael Penn, even though this is the only song I’ve ever heard by you, it’s all I need to know to know that you are an amazing musician.  Since I recorded this song off the radio, as the years progressed, new knowledge would trickle in to me that would bring me back to this one.  For example, it wasn’t until many years later that I figured out you were Sean Penn’s brother.  And then I wanted to listen to this song again.  And it wasn’t until I was actually converting this to an mp3 that I discovered that the name of this song was “No Myth”.  And then I wanted to listen to this song again.  Yeah, I know the DJ says it at the end of this track, but I don’t think I paid attention to that.  I always thought the name of this one was “Someone To Dance With.”  Which I think is a great title, Michael Penn.  If you were to tell me that wasn’t the title, my second guess would have been “Romeo In Black Jeans”.  Don’t think I would have EVER guessed “No Myth”, mostly because I don’t think I ever knew that’s what you were singing.  I also wouldn’t have known who Heathcliff was at the time.  Well, I would have guessed you were talking about Dr. Huxtable or the mischievous orange cat. But even then I would have known that didn’t seem right.  Every time I’d put on a pair of black jeans, though, and I had a few pairs throughout the years, this song would always pop into my head.  And while I no longer own black jeans, I did find someone to dance with.  Well, watch TV with, anyway.

“No Myth”

Sooooooo

She says it’s time she goes

But wanted to be sure I know

She hopes we can be friends

“I think
Yeah, I guess we can” say I

But didn’t think to ask her whyyyy

She blocked her eyes and drew the curtains
With knots I’ve got yet to untie

What if I were Romeo in black jeans
What if I was Heathcliff, it’s no myth

Maybe she’s just looking for
Someone to dance with

Sheeeee

It was just too soon ta tell

And looking for some parallel

Can be an endless game

Weeeeee

We said goodbye before hello

My secrets she will never knooow

And if I dig a hole to China
I’ll catch the first junk to Soho

What if I were Romeo in black jeans
What if I was Heathcliff, it’s no myth

Maybe she’s just looking for
Someone ta dance with

Some time from now you’ll bow ta pressure, some things in life you cannot measure by degrees

I’m between the poles and the equator
Don’t send no private investigator ta find me please
‘Less he speaks Chinese

And can dance like Astaire overseas

Okay

<awesome Michael Penn jam>

What if I was

So what if I was

Maybe she’s just looking for
Someone to dance with

What if I was Romeo in
Black jeans
What if I was Heathcliff, it’s no myth

Maybe she’s just looking for
Someone to dance with

<awesome Michael Penn jam>
