Radio 51, side A, track 1: “The Heat Is On” by Glenn Frey, #90 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Glenn Frey - The Heat Is OnOh, Glenn Frey, yes!!!  It IS on!!!  Not just the heat, but everything!  If one can have a pinnacle in a radio-taping career, if one can even have a radio-taping career, this was the beginning of said pinnacle.  Sure, I’d already tackled a big countdown before, but that countdown was for songs from one year.  This was a countdown for a whole decade.  Most of the songs I recorded on “The Top 88 of ’88”, I’d already recorded at some point before, but THIS, who KNOWS what kind of radio gold I was going to find, Glenn Frey?!?!

And here you were, starting out this huge countdown, with this hugely awesome song.  I was actually already very familiar with this one because I owned the soundtrack to “Beverly Hills Cop”, and I’m pretty sure that this song kicked off that soundtrack as well.  It’s a pretty great song to kick anything off, really.  So I’d already heard it about a bazillion times by the time December 31, 1989 rolled around.  I listened to every song on the “Beverly Hills Cop” soundtrack about a bazillion times.  Ooo, maybe “Neutron Dance” will make it onto the countdown!!!  Fingers crossed.

Considering how much I listened to the soundtrack, I don’t think I’ve ever actually seen the movie all the way through.  If I have, I don’t remember it.  I remember bits and pieces, like Axel hanging off the back of a semi trailer and Bronson Pinchot and something with a banana in a tailpipe?  Also, isn’t Mike from “Breaking Bad” and “Better Call Saul” the bad guy in it?  Anyway, maybe I should watch it all the way through since I do enjoy the non-homogenized Eddie Murphy before Disney got a hold of him.

You may have noticed a couple changes with this tape, Glenn Frey.  I decided to eschew the Roman numeral system starting with this monumental tape.  Also, I started actually writing down the dates when I recorded off the radio.  Not that it wouldn’t have been hard to figure out on this one, what with it being New Year’s Eve and all.  But it will be nice to have an idea of when exactly stuff was going on from here on out.

So anyway, Glenn Frey, I was pretty excited to hear what was going to happen on this countdown.  And also, I was immediately horrified when I pressed Play/Record for this song.  Because as you’ll hear from this track, there was a lot of static coming in on the signal.  You’ll know from the hundreds upon hundreds of songs I’ve posted on here that static was not an issue with my radio station.  So for it to happen on THIS of all nights was pretty horrible for little ol’ neurotic me.  Every time some interference showed up, it was like a punch to the gut.  But I had to fight through it, Glenn Frey.  This was an historic moment.  THIS would tell me which songs were the most important songs of my formative years, even if I’d never heard them before.  This was one of the biggest deals of my young life, and I don’t care what that says about me at all, because thanks to my obsessive nerdiness then, I get to hear this awesome song right now.  Bring on the countdown!!!!

“The Heat Is On”

<awesome Glenn Frey jam>

The heat is on

On the street

Inside yo head

On every beat

And the beat’s so loud

Deep inside

The pressure’s high

Just ta stay alive

‘Cause the heat is on

Woo!

Oh-wo-ho
Oh-wo-ho, caught up in the action, I’ve been lookin’ out fo you
Oh-wo-ho
Oh-wo-ho, tell me can ya feel it
Tell me can ya feel it
Tell me can ya feel it

The heat is on

The heat is on

The heat is on

The heat is on
Burnin’, burnin’, burnin’
It’s on the street

On

The shadows are

On the darker side

Behind the doors

It’s a wilder ride

You can make or break

Can win or lose

That’s a chance you take

When the heat’s on you

When the heat is on

Oh-wo-ho
Oh-wo-ho, caught up in the action, I’ve been lookin’ out fo you
Oh-wo-ho
Oh-wo-ho, tell me can ya feel it
Tell me can ya feel it
Tell me can ya feel it

The heat is on

The heat is on
Burnin’, burnin’, burnin’
It’s on the street

Heat is on
Flames’a burnin’ higher

Baby, cancha feel it
Yeah, it’s on the street

Woo hoo!
