Radio 51, side A, track 6: “Hard To Say I’m Sorry” by Chicago, #84 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Chicago - Hard To Say I'm SorryOh, Chicago, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard this song.  Enough times that I know every little note, very little trumpet blast, every single lyric by heart.  Enough to know that you’re one of my all-time favorite bands.  Enough to not be surprised to see you’ve got at least one song considered one of the best songs of the decade.  And this track might mark the moment where I decided I liked this DJ who was hosting the whole thing.

See what I did there?  “Mark” the moment?  Because the DJ’s name is Mark Chase.  The countdown was the first time I’d heard of the guy, and as I’m not big on new things, unless it’s new music, of course, I was a little cautious about him.  He didn’t sound as interesting as some of my faves like Monty Foster and Vic St. John.  But he was growing on me.  Like when he called you guys his all-time favorite band.  Or when at the end of the song you could tell he was very clearly listening along and made sure to let your song play out to the end before he jumped in with an enthusiastic “Yes!”  He sounded a little awkward and he sounded like he may have drawn the short straw, what with getting stuck hosting a radio countdown in the middle of the night while everyone else was out partying.  So I felt for the guy.  What with all the awkwardness and his love of Chicago, he seemed very familiar to me.  I’m saying I was also awkward and loved you, Chicago.  And what do you know, absolutely nothing has changed since I recorded this on New Year’s Eve, 1989.

“Hard To Say I’m Sorry”

<awesome Chicago jam>

Everybody needs a little time away

I heard her say

From each oootheeeer

Even lovers need a holiday

Far away
From each ooootheeeer

Hooold me now

It’s hard for me ta say I’m sorry

I just wanchoo ta stay

After all that we’ve been through

I will make it up to you

I promise to

And after all that’s been said and done

You’re just a part of me, I can’t let go

Ooo ooo

Couldn’t stand ta be kept away

Just for the day

From your boooodyyyy

Wouldn’t wanna be swept away

Far away
From the one that I love

Hold me now

It’s hard for me ta say I’m sorry

I just wanchoo ta know

Hold me now

I really wanna tell you I’m sorry

I could never let you gooooo

After all that we’ve been through

I will make it up ta you

I promise to

And after all that’s been said and done

You’re just a part of me
I can’t let goooo

After all that we’ve been through
I will make it up to you

I promise to

<awesome Chicago jam>

You’re gonna be the lucky one

<awesome Chicago jam>

When we get there gonna jump in the air

No one’ll see us ’cause there’s nobody there

After all, ya know we really don’t care

Hold on
I’m gonna take you there

<awesome Chicago jam>
