Radio 51, side B, track 4: “Straight Up” by Paula Abdul, #79 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Paula Abdul - Straight UpOh, Paula Abdul, I’m so proud of you!!!  Two years and 33 tapes ago I was first reminiscing about how much I loved you then and now as we listened to your radio debut for the first time on this blog.  And now here you are again, and this time that song is considered one of the best songs of the decade!  Yay for you, Paula Abdul!  And yay for the rest of us, since it’s another excuse to listen to “Straight Up”.  I have a feeling that there are going to be a few “new” songs like this on this countdown whose claim to the top 90 of the ’80s might be questionable, and I’m sure that it was the DJs throwing us youngsters a bone for our dedication to the hot new hits on their radio station.  But I’m totally fine with that.  After all, I was one of the biggest supporters of the radio station and all my radio stars.  Not financially, of course.  Financially, I was basically keeping Sony comfortable what with all the money my parents were shelling out to buy me blank tapes so I could record songs like this off the radio.  But you understand what I’m saying, Paula Abdul.  This would be the last time I recorded “Straight Up” off the radio (at least the last time during this time period, anyway, but we’ll get to that in a few years), but what a way to finish up, eh, Paula Abdul?  Congrats on making one of the best songs of the ’80s or really any decade!

“Straight Up”

<awesome Paula Abdul jam>

Lost

In a dream

I don’t know which
Way to go
(Let me say it if)
You
Are all thatcha seem
Then baby I’m movin’ (movin’)
Way too slow

I’ve been a fool before
Wouldn’t like ta get my love caught in the slammin’ door
How ’bout some information pleeease

Straight up now tell me do ya really wanna love
Me forever (oh oh oh)
Or am I caught in a hit and run

Straight up now tell me is it gonna be you
And me together (oh oh oh)
Or are you just havin’ fun

Time’s

Standin’ still

Waitin’ for some
(Waitin’ for some)
Small clue

(Let me tell ya that)
I
Keep getting chills
When I think your love (when I think your love)
Is true

I’ve been a fool before
Wouldn’t like ta get my love caught in the slammin’ door
How ’bout some information pleeease

Straight up now tell me do ya really wanna love
Me forever (oh oh oh)
Or am I caught in a hit and run

Straight up now tell me is it gonna be you
And me together (oh oh oh)
Or are you just havin’ fun

You are so hard to read
You play hide and seek
With your true intentions

If you’re only playin’ games
I’ll just have to saaay
A-bye-bye-bye-bye-bye-bye-bye-bye-bye

Do do ya love me (Do do ya love me)
(Baby)
Come on, now
Do do ya love me (do do ya love me)

Tell me, baby

I’ve been a fool before
Wouldn’t like ta get my love caught in the slammin’ door
Are ya more than hot for me
Or am I a page in your history

Look, I don’t mean ta make demands
But the word and the deed go hand in hand
How about some information pleeease (please please)
(A-please please)

Straight up now tell me

(Tell me)

Straight up now tell me

(Tell me)

Straight up now tell me

(Tell me)

Straight up now tell me

Straight up now tell me

Straight up now tell me do ya really wanna love
Me forever (oh oh oh)
Or am I caught in a hit and run

Straight up now tell me is it gonna be you
And me together (oh oh oh)
Or are you just havin’ fun

Straight up now tell me do ya really wanna love
Me forever (oh oh oh)
Or am I caught in a hit and run

Straight up now tell me is it gonna be you
And me together (oh oh oh)

  1. I remember Paula Abdul’s Opposites Attract. That was a great track too, but I love Straight Up. This is a great blog and I love that you can actually play the track on the post. Brilliant!
