Radio 52, side A, track 5: “My Prerogative” by Bobby Brown, #70 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Bobby Brown - My PrerogativeOh, Bobby Brown, so you made it onto the top 90 of the ’80s, huh?  Hm.  All right.  I’ll give you a polite golf clap.  I’m not saying I don’t like this song, Bobby Brown, but it’s a pretty crowded race to the top, and I’m just not sure if I’d have included this one on my own personal countdown.  But it was pretty popular and it is a great song, so all right, I’ll go along with it.

Pretty big of me, right, Bobby Brown?  You and I have had our differences in the past, but I’ve been trying hard to turn over a new leaf and be less of an asshole.  In fact, that was one of my subconscious resolutions this year, to make this the Year of the Not-Asshole.  I’m not going to say that I’ve been 100% successful, BUT I think I’ve actually done a pretty good job.  At work I’ve tried really hard to just let things go, and I gotta tell ya, it makes work way easier.  I don’t have to change the direction I’m walking if I see somebody I don’t like.  I even smile and say hi to people I kinda can’t stand.  That last sentence was kind of asshole-ish, wasn’t it?  Maybe I should amend what I was saying.  It’s not that I’m trying to BE less of an asshole, I’m trying to ACT less of an asshole.  At my core, I just kinda am an asshole, but if I keep pretending I’m not, maybe I’ll eventually metamorphosize into a better human being.  Or maybe not.  All I know is, it’s kind of fun seeing the look on my nemeses’ faces when I say “Hi!  How are ya?” and they’re not sure how to respond.  Which is kind of an asshole thing to do.  Guess maybe I’m not doing as great a job as I thought at not acting like an asshole.  Oh well.  It’s my prerogative, right, Ted?  We outta here.

“My Prerogative”

<awesome Bobby Brown jam>

Get busy

Everybody’s talkin’ all this stuff about me (Now now)
Why don’t they just let me live?

(Oooo)
I don’t need permission
Made my own decisions (Oh!)
That’s my prerogative

They say I’m crazy

I really don’t care

That’s my prerogative

They say I’m nasty

But I don’t give a damn

Gettin’ girls is how I live

Some ask me questions

Why am I so real?

But they don’t understand me
Really don’t know the deal about a brother

Tryin’ hard ta make it right

Not long ago
Before I win this fight
Sing!

Everybody’s talkin’ all this stuff about me
Why don’t they just let me live (Tell me why)
I don’t need permission
Made my own decisions (Oh!)
That’s my prerogative
It’s my prerogative
(It’s my prerogative)

It’s the way that I wanna live (It’s my prerogative)
I can do just what I feel (It’s my prerogative)
Nobody can tell me what ta do (It’s my prerogative)

‘Cause what I’m doin’
I’m doin’ for you now

Don’t get me wrong, I’m really not zooped

Ego trips is not my thing

All these strange relationships
Really gets me down

I see nothin’ wrong
With spreadin’ myself around
Sing!

Everybody’s talkin’ all this stuff about me (yeah)
Why don’t they just let me live (Tell me why)
I don’t need permission (I don’t need)
Made my own decisions (My own decisions)
That’s my prerogative
It’s my prerogative
(It’s my prerogative)

I can do what I wanna do (It’s my prerogative)

Can live my life (It’s my prerogative)

I’m doin’ it just for you (It’s my prerogative)

It’s tell me, tell me whyyy can’t IIII live my liiiife (Live my life)
Without aaaall of the thiiings that people saaaay
(Ohhh Ohhh)

Yo tell it
Kick it like this
Oh no nooo
I can do what I wanna do
Me and you
Together, together, together, together, together

Everybody’s talkin’ all this stuff about me (Everybody’s talkin’)
Why don’t they just let me live? (Why)
I don’t need permission (I can make)
Made my own decisions (My own decisions)
That’s my prerogative (Ohhhhhhh)

What is this, a business that I can’t have money in my pocket and people not talk about me?
This world is a trip, I don’t know what’s goin’ on these days

Got this person over here talkin’ about me, this person
Hey, listen, let me tell ya somethin’, it’s my prerogative, I can do what I wanna do

I made this money, you didn’t, right, Ted?

We outta here

It’s my
It’s my
It’s my
It’s my
It’s my my my my my my my my my my my my my
It’s my

It’s my prerogative
