Radio 52, side B, track 3: “Addicted To Love” by Robert Palmer, #65 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Robert Palmer - Addicted To LoveOh, Robert Palmer, let’s talk about the definition of “sexy” for a moment.  So according to Merriam-Webster, sexy can either mean “sexually suggestive or stimulating; erotic” OR “generally attractive or interesting; appealing”.  Sooo, can we both agree that that second definition should be removed from the dictionary?  Help me out here, Robert Palmer.  If something is going to be defined as “sexy”, it should be firmly in that first category (that’s what she said).  I don’t get worked up about much, Robert Palmer (that’s also what she said), but I am unbelievably tired of people calling things sexy using that second definition.  This book is sexy.  That car is sexy.  That’s one sexy dishwasher.

No, Robert Palmer!  No!

I get that everybody has their thing, but in general, a car is not intrinsically sexy on its own.  Sure, you can make the argument that it could be “generally attractive or interesting”, but no, Robert Palmer!  The word has “sex” in it.  You can’t just be throwing that word out there for things that are interesting to make them seem even more interesting and maybe a little forbidden.  It’s wrong.  I can’t just say to someone “Hey, I read this really sexy article on the economy  yesterday”.  I mean I could, using that second definition, but no!  Plus it would just be a weird thing to say.

When I hear the word “sexy”, it means “one might be interested in having sex of some kind with who/whatever that’s describing”.  So a fancy razor or an expensive lipstick or designer jeans might MAKE someone sexy, but (most) people aren’t thinking “I am SO going to get with that designer handbag”.  Enough is enough, Robert Palmer.

The reason that I bring all this up is that this song is sexy.  And yes, I know what I just wrote about my personal definition, and yes, I would totally do it with this song.  The video for this one was probably one of my first forays into sexual confusion, and frankly, it still is.  I don’t know where I saw this video as a kid, but it made quite a splash, for obvious reasons.  Those women.  Oh, those women.  But they’re so vacant.  But yet they’re not wearing bras.  But they look so severe and cold and distant.  But yet they’re not wearing bras.  You see my predicament, Robert Palmer.

Well, we’re not going to get to a solution in this post, but I appreciate you hearing me out.  Now I’m going to listen to this song again and watch the video.  For research.
