Radio 52, side B, track 4: “Kiss” by Prince and The Revolution, #64 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Prince and The Revolution - KissOh, Prince and The Revolution, boom!  First artist on the countdown to have not one but TWO songs considered the top 90 of the ’80s!  Bam!  Also, this is one of the few songs on my tape collection where I was able to capture both the original and the remake, the remake of course being the Tom Jones version.  And the Tom Jones version was the first version I’d heard of this one.  In fact, this track probably marks the first time that I actually heard the original.  And at the time, I preferred the Tom Jones version.  Oh, I know, Prince and The Revolution, that’s pretty sacrilegious to say, totally get that.  But that version was over 30 tapes ago, and I listened to it A LOT.  So I was just more familiar with it.  Still love it, of course, but now that I’ve gotten a bit (a bit?  a LOT) older, I’ve come to appreciate your original version for the same reason I loved the Tom Jones version, and that’s because of the singing voices featured on each.  They’re of course night and day, but both of them are amazing.  Tom Jones has that booming baritone that I envy to this day.  But you, Prince, I don’t even know how to categorize your voice.  All I can do is listen to it in awe as it rides the scales like the sexiest (that’s right, I said “sexiest”), funkiest roller coaster who ever lived.  As I’ve said way way back, you’re on a whole other level.  I can’t even begin to pretend that I’m cool enough to truly enjoy your music.  But I do.  So much.  I’ll just never quite get it.  But that’s all right, right?  I hope so, ’cause I’m listenin’ to this one again.

“Kiss”

Ya don’t have to be cool
To rule my world
Ain’t no particular sign I’m more compatible with
