Radio 53, side A, track 4: “Need You Tonight” by INXS, #56 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

INXS - Need You TonightOh, INXS, obviously we know that you’re amazing.  How amazing?  Well, the first time I recorded this song off the radio, it was when this song showed up as #10 on the Top 88 of ’88.  One of several of your songs that showed up on that countdown, I might add.  And now here you are again, on not just another countdown, but a countdown of the best songs of the whole damn decade!!!  And #56 out of every pop song that was on the radio over a period of 10 years is not shabby.  Not shabby at all, INXS.

The first time I heard this song, I thought the name of it was “You’re One Of My Kind”.  Which sounds a bit creepier and Pod People-ish than the real title.  So thanks to the DJ for setting me straight on that.  You guys made some great damn music in my childhood, INXS, and I was excited as hell to see that a song I was really familiar with, a song that I’d already recorded off the radio before, was one of the best songs of the ’80s.  There had been a couple songs on the countdown from ’88 and ’89 that felt a little questionable, that felt like the radio station was throwing them a bone because they were still too new for anyone to truly determine just how great they were.  But this was not one of those songs, INXS.  This was not a pity vote.  This was a well-deserved spot on what was, at the time, the most important night of my life.

Typing that last sentence out, that makes me sound a bit sad and pathetic, doesn’t it?  Well, it’s all about perception, and. . .well, most probably would agree that it’s sad and pathetic.  But even now, actually realizing just how sad and pathetic I kinda was (am?), being able to celebrate amazing songs like this pretty much justifies the hours and hours and hours and HOURS I’ve spent (wasted?  no, spent.  right?) recording music off the radio and writing about it.  Love you, INXS.
