Radio 53, side B, track 6: “Celebration” by Kool & The Gang, #46 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Celebration - Kool & The GangOh, Kool & The Gang, the first thing we need to address about this track is that horrid, awful radio interference right in the middle of us celebrating this awesome song.  We’d already had a few snafus with the radio signal during this countdown, but this was by far the worst.  The signal, after the most soul-crushing chunk of static I’ve ever encountered, actually completely dropped.  Like no sound at all.  Like not EVEN static.  As you can imagine, I was absolutely horrified that such a thing would sully these important radio-taping proceedings.  I think the worst part about it was that moment of panic, the same kind of panic that immediately kicks in when the lights suddenly go out, that moment when you frantically think to yourself “What if the signal doesn’t ever come back in?  What if this is the new normal?”

I wonder how long I would have stayed next to the radio, Kool & The Gang?  I wonder how long I would have just sat there, listening to the static, waiting for the signal to come back in so I could resume my countdown taping.  I feel very confident that I would have stayed there for a long time.  I’m actually stressing myself out right now thinking about it, because I’m getting into 14-year-old me’s head, and I know that I physically would not have been able to sleep knowing that there was a possibility the signal could come back in at any moment, knowing that if I stepped away from the radio, that there was a chance I might miss some song that I would never be able to record again.

Luckily, that’s all changed.

. . .

Just kidding.  Not really.  You may have noticed that there are a lot of track lists on this blog that include songs from the very recent past that could not have possibly been recorded in the late ’80s.  We’ll talk about it more later, Kool & The Gang, but suffice to say that a side effect of this blog has been a rediscovery of my obsession with recording music off the radio.  Much to my wife’s chagrin.  Since I yelled at her just a few moments ago when she deigned to touch my recording equipment while I was recording music and I thought that she might have messed up the recording of whatever song was being recorded.

So absolutely nothing has changed in 26 years, Kool & The Gang.  Reason to celebrate?

Yeah, I didn’t think so, either. . .
