Radio 53, side B, track 7: “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen, #45 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Queen - Crazy Little Thing Called LoveOh, Queen, can you believe that we’ve already hit the halfway point of the countdown?!?!  Seems like we just started it yesterday.  Even though we technically started it about 26 years ago.  Still, though, you know what I’m saying.  And at the time I recorded this song, I thought this was the first song I’d ever heard by you.  That wasn’t true, of course.  For one thing, I’d been listening to a couple of songs by you for years on an old 45.  Plus I’m pretty sure I’d heard “We Are The Champions” and “Another One Bites The Dust” (and I KNOW I heard “Another One Rides The Bus”).  But the thing is, I don’t know if I’d have actually recognized that these were all songs from the same group since they sounded so crazy different.  Like this song.  Which I instantly fell in love with.  It sounded like an early rock song from the ’50s.  I assumed that’s what it was when I recorded this and that it was mistakenly added to the countdown.  Either that, or it got re-released during the ’80s so it could technically be on the countdown.  I definitely didn’t think this was a song by the same band that brought us “Bicycle Race” and “Fat Bottomed Girls” (not that I’d heard those two classics at that point in my life).  I definitely didn’t make the connection that you were the same guys who sang “Bohemian Rhapsody” and “I’m In Love With My Car”, which I’d been listening to since I’d gotten my first record player.  All I knew was that this song was awesome and far too brief and absolutely deserved to be on a countdown of not only the best songs of the ’80s (even if I didn’t believe that’s when it was made) but also the best songs ever made.  Love ain’t such a crazy thing when it’s love for this song, Queen.

“Crazy Little Thing Called Love”

This thing

Called love

I just
Can’t handle it
This thing

Called love

I must

Get ’round to it, I ain’t ready
Crazy little thing called love

This thing (this thing)
Called love (called love)
It cries (like a baby)
In a cradle all night
It swings (woo-ooo)
It jives (woo-woo)
Shakes all over like a jellyfish, kinda like it
Crazy little thing called love

There goes my baby

She knows how ta rock and roll, she drives me crazy

She gives me hot cold fever, she leaves me in a cool, cool sweat

I gotta be cool

Relax

Get hip

Get on my tracks, take a back seat

Hitchhike

Take a long ride on a motor bike until I’m ready
Crazy little thing called love

<awesome Queen jam>

I gotta be cool

Relax

Get hip

Get on my tracks, take a back seat

Hitchhike

Take a long ride on a motor bike ’til I’m ready (get ready)
Crazy little thing called love

This thing

I just
Can’t handle it
