Radio 54, side A, track 4: “Beat It” by Michael Jackson, #40 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Michael Jackson - Beat ItOh, Michael Jackson, how is this not the #1 song on this countdown?!?!?  I can’t think of a better song that epitomizes the best of ’80s pop than this one, and I should know, since I’ve recorded thousands of songs, am I right?  There are songs that I like better, sure, but not many, and in general it’s hard for me to nail down songs that I’d put on my own personal countdown because I just love so many of them.  And I’m definitely timid about making definitive statements about things on the internet because, you know, the internet.  But after listening to this song for the first time in a long time, I have no doubt in my mind that this is the #1 song of the ’80s.  It just is.  Even if someone tells me to beat it, which is probably the politest thing one could actually say on the internet, I would not beat it, Michael Jackson.  I don’t wanna be a macho man, and I don’t wanna be bad, but I will not beat it.  Maybe I should stop talking about how I’m not going to beat it.  That’s going to show up in some weird Google searches and I don’t want to be around for that.  My point is, though, Michael Jackson, is that were it not for the multitude of songs that you have on this countdown already, I’d say you were robbed.  But since this is a countdown from two decades ago, I think we can all take a deep breath, relax, and be comforted by the fact that we can listen to this song whenever we want to.

“Beat It”

<awesome Michael Jackson jam>

They told him donchoo ever come around here
Don’t wanna see ya face, you better disappear

The fire’s in their eyes and their words are really clear, so beat it

Just beat it

You better run, you better do whatchoo can
Don’t wanna see no blood, don’t be a macho man
Ooo

You wanna be tough, better do whatchoo can, so beat it

Butcha wanna be bad, just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants ta be defeated

Showin’ how funky
Strong it’s your fight

It doesn’t matter
Who’s wrong or right
Just beat it (beat it)
Just beat it (beat it)

Just beat it (beat it)
Just beat it (beat it, uh!)

They’re out ta getchoo, better leave while you can
Don’t wanna be a boy, you wanna be a man

You wanna stay alive, better do whatchoo can, so beat it

Just beat it

Uh!

You have to show them that you’re really not scared
Ya playin’ with your life, this ain’t no truth or dare
Uh!
They’ll kick you, then they beatchoo
They’ll tell you it’s fair, so beat it

Butcha wanna be bad, just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants ta be defeated

Showin’ how funky
Strong it’s your fight

It doesn’t matter
Who’s wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants ta be defeated

Showin’ how funky
Strong it’s your fight

It doesn’t matter
Who’s wrong or right
Just beat it
Beat it

Beat it, beat it

Beat it
Beat it

Beat it, beat it

<awesome Michael Jackson jam>

Beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants ta be defeated

Showin’ how funky
Strong it’s your fight

It doesn’t matter
Who’s wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants ta be defeated

Showin’ how funky
Strong it’s your fight

It doesn’t matter
Who’s wrong or right
Just beat it, beat it, beat it, beat it
No one wants ta be defeated

You know what always go me about this song? This line: “They’ll kick you and they’ll beat you and they’ll tell you it’s fair.” They’ll tell you it’s fair. As in, not only will they abuse you, but they’ll tell you you deserve it. Maybe I”m overthinking the lyric, but this was always really profound to me.

I don’t think you’re overthinking it at all. It’s a good observation. Now that you’ve mentioned it, I hadn’t really given it a lot of thought, but I think sub-consciously I always assumed who “they” were were pretty sadistic and not to be trifled with, particularly because of the lyric you pointed out.
