Radio 54, side B, track 3: “Shout” by Tears For Fears, #33 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Tears For Fears - ShoutOh, Tears For Fears, we JUST talked about how “Weird Al” introduced me to one of the songs on the countdown, and now here we are with another one.  And it was from the exact same song, “Polka Party”.  Last time I included the video, I hadn’t actually listened to it, but I decided to this time for old time’s sake, and there were actually a LOT of songs on this countdown that were also included on “Polka Party”, including “Rock Me Amadeus” and “Papa Don’t Preach”, PLUS there were a ton of other songs that I’d forgotten were highlighted in that song, like “Harlem Shuffle” and “Sussudio” and “Nasty” and “What You Need”.

I haven’t thought about it in a long time, Tears For Fears, but I really, really, really loved “Weird Al”‘s polka jams.  Like a lot.  Like if more polka were like his polkas, I would totally be into polka.  Honestly, I should be more into polkas than I am.  We used to go visit my great-aunt and great-uncle on their farm in South Dakota and they played in an old-time country band and he played the accordion and she yodeled and they were really good at it.  But I don’t know that they could have or would have taken requests for songs by INXS or The Rolling Stones.  DEFINITELY not Madonna.

But as I’m writing this, I do realize that I do have a soft spot for the sound of the accordion.  That’s probably why I love Corn Mo so damn much and why I’ve listened to “The Magic Is You!” about a thousand times.

So anyway, we’ve talked about pretty much every other song and artist but you, Tears For Fears.  Sorry about that.  But this is a great song, too.  Even if there’s no accordion in it.

“Shout”

Shout
Shout
Let it all out

These are the things I can do without
Come on

I’m talking to you, come on

In violent times

You shouldn’t have to sell your soul

In black and white

They really, really ought to know

Those one track minds

That took you for a working boy

Kiss them goodbye

You shouldn’t have to jump for joy

You shouldn’t have to jump for joy
Shout
Shout
Let it all out

These are the things I can do without
Come on

I’m talking to you, come on

They gave you life

And in return you gave them hell

As cold as ice

I hope we live to tell the tale

I hope we live to tell the tale
Shout
Shout
Let it all out

These are the things I can do without
Come on

I’m talking to you, come on

<awesome Tears For Fears jam>

Shout
Shout
Let it all out (let it all ouuuuut)
These are the things I can do without
Come on

I’m talking to you, come on

And when you’ve taken down your guard

If I could change your mind
I’d really love to break your heart

I’d really love to break your heart
Shout
Shout
Let it all out

These are the things I can do without
Coooome on

I’m talkin’ to you, so come on

<awesome Tears For Fears jam>

Shout
Shout
Let it all out

These are the things I can do without
Come on
