Radio 55, side B, track 1: “Eye Of The Tiger” by Survivor, #22 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

Survivor - Eye Of The TigerOh, Survivor, this is the official song of ’80s movie montages.  Well, I don’t know if it’s official official, but it might as well be.  And it should also be the official song to punch at the air while running.  Well, maybe this and the original “Rocky” theme song.  Any time I hear either of those songs I want to jump up and start pummeling empty space.  Key phrase is WANT to.  I’m a little too lazy and a lot too out of shape to do any such thing.  And any montage involving me exercising would have to be very quick cuts of me engaging in some kind of activity, because otherwise it would very quickly just be a montage of me doubled over gasping for breath.

I kid, Survivor.  I’ve actually been exercising for the last several months.  Just a couple of miles a day at a brisk pace, but I’ve lost over 20 pounds.  The goal was to lose 40 pounds by the time I turn 40, but I don’t think that’s going to happen.  Still, though, I can fit into T-shirts that I haven’t worn in several years since they’d made me look like I was seven months pregnant.

And do you know what’s kept me motivated, Survivor?  The goal of being healthier and living longer, you say?  Hahaha!  That’s good, Survivor!  No, Survivor, it’s actually songs like this that have kept me donning workout gear and huffing and puffing my way around my neighborhood every night.  A few months ago, my wife talked me into joining the rest of the 21st century and getting a smart phone, and since then, I’ve become slightly obsessed with Spotify.  Mostly because I quickly realized that for me to do any kind of exercise, I needed to keep myself distracted from the fact that I was miserable the whole time and from the sound of me wheezing and moaning and sounding like I was about to die.  So now I’ve got my “Workout” playlist blaring in my ears, and while it doesn’t completely keep from reminding me that I hate physical fitness, it keeps me motivated enough to get my gradually receding ass outside for thirty minutes.  And I’m sure it’s no surprise that this song was one of the first ones I added to my playlist.  And I’m sure it’s also no surprise that by the time I get home from my walk, I’m so winded that if I did discover that a tiger was eyeing me, I’d just stop and let him eat, because who are we kidding?  So thanks for helping me stay (relatively) fit, Survivor.  Now to figure out what music would have stopped me from eating that pint of ice cream last night. . .

“Eye Of The Tiger”

<AWESOME Survivor jam>

Risin’ up

Back on the street

Did my time
Took my chances

Went the distance, now I’m back on my feet
Just a man
And his will to survive

So many times
It happens too fast

You change your passion for glory

Don’t lose ya grip
On the dreams of the past
You must fight just to keep them aliiiive

It’s the
Eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up
To the challenge of our rival

And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all with the eyyyyye
Of the tiiigeeer

Face ta face

Out in the heat

Hangin’ tough
Stayin’ hungry

They stack the odds ’til we take to the street
For the kill with the skill to surviiiive

It’s the
Eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up
To the challenge of our rival

And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all with the eyyyyye
Of the tiiigeeer

Risin’ up

Straight to the top

Had the guts
Got the glory

Went the distance, now I’m not gonna stop
Just a man
And his will to surviiiive

It’s the
Eye of the tiger, it’s the thrill of the fight
Risin’ up
To the challenge of our rival

And the last known survivor stalks his prey in the night
And he’s watchin’ us all with the eyyyyyyyyyyye
Of the tiiigeeer
