Radio 56, side A, track 4: “(Just Like) Starting Over” by John Lennon, #13 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

John Lennon - Just Like Starting OverOh, John Lennon, I feel like when I recorded this off the radio that maybe I’d heard it before then, because I feel like I remember remembering the song from when I was an even smaller kid.  Does that even make sense?  Well, it doesn’t matter, John Lennon.  The main thing is that besides my fuzzy recollections of maybe having heard it before December 31, 1989, this particular track is the only time I heard this song and REALLY remembered hearing it.  Honestly, the only time I’ve heard this song since is if I play this particular tape.  And I’m really glad that I recorded it since it makes me happy.  A bittersweet happy, but happy nonetheless.  Obviously, you can’t hear anything by you without feeling a little bittersweet about it, considering how you were taken much too soon, and hearing songs like this that showcase the great music you made just makes it hurt that much more.

But let’s not dwell on it, John Lennon.  Let’s just enjoy your auspicious solo debut on my radio tapes.  What I’ve loved about this song from the very first time I listened to it all those years ago was how playful it is, playful not necessarily being a word one would attribute to you.  I love how it sounds like you’re channeling your inner Elvis and how it feels like it could have been playing on a jukebox in the ’50s during the early days of rock and roll, even before you and your buddies redefined rock and roll for all time.  In the context of this blog, this song is meta-nostalgic, since I’m reminiscing about a song that I recorded in 1989 that was released in 1981 that was a throwback to the songs of several decades before.  So mind-blowing, am I right, John Lennon?  And once I’m done listening to this song, you know what I’m going to do?  I’m going to start it over.  Clever, eh, John Lennon?

“(Just Like) Starting Over”

Our life

Together

Is so precious

Together

We have grooown

We have groooooown

Although our love

Is still special

Let’s take a chance and fly awaaaay
Somewheeeeere
Alone

It’s been too long since we took the time
No one’s to blame, I know time flies so quickly

But when I see you, darlin’

It’s like we both are fallin’ in love
Again
It’ll be
Just like starting over

Startin’ oveeeeeer

Every day we used to make it love
Why can’t we be makin’ love nice’n easy

It’s time to spread our wings and fly
Don’t let another day go by, my love
It’ll be
Just like starting over

Starting oveeeeeer

Why don’t we take off
Alone

Take a trip somewhere far, far away

We’ll be together
All alooone again

Like we used to in the early days

Well, well, darlin’, it’s been too long since we took the time
No one’s to blame, I know time flies so quickly

But when I see you, darlin’
It’s like we both are fallin’ in love
Again
It’ll be
Just like starting over

Starting oveeeeeeeeeer
Look out!

Our life

Together

Is so precious

Together

We have groown

Mmm

We have grooooooooown

Although our love

Is still special

Let’s take a chance and fly away
Somewheeeeeeere

My favourite solo Lennon! Have you ever taken the Yoko songs from Double Fantasy and played them half speed? Quite an experience. 🙂
