Radio 56, side A, track 6: “Keep On Loving You” by REO Speedwagon, #11 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

REO Speedwagon - Keep on Loving YouOh, REO Speedwagon, can you feel the excitement?  It’s almost palpable, isn’t it?  This is the last song before we hit the top ten songs of the whole decade!  It’s definitely a song worth getting excited over, too, REO Speedwagon.  Hell, any song by you is worth getting excited over.  What was about to happen was going to be the culmination of the hours and hours and hours and HOURS I’d spent sitting in front of the radio, capturing pretty much every song that got played.  This was going to make the entire day I’d spent recording all 90 songs from the countdown absolutely worth it.  The anxiety over the static and half-recorded songs, the foregoing of food and bathroom breaks, all of it was going to be worth it because I was about to hear what were considered the best songs ever made in the 1980s.

This was back when anticipation was much more of a deal than it is now.  Where there wasn’t such a thing as a “spoiler” because no one had the ability to immediately spill the beans after they’d seen or heard or read something.  And because everyone was probably watching or hearing something at the same time you were.  Where a world premiere was actually kind of a big deal because there was no such thing as internet leaks or set photos or previews for previews of movies.  We were right on the cusp of becoming the pop culture-obsessed society we’ve become, but we weren’t quite there yet.  “Upskirt photos” weren’t a thing.  There wasn’t yet an online depository of when and where you could see celebrities’ boobs.  Porn was kinda hard to get your hands on.  And I’m talking magazines.  I don’t even know where one would be able to find a movie without actually having to go to a theater to watch it.  This was before there was a whole Emmy category for “entertainment reporting”.  Where “reality TV” was the evening news.

I’m not complaining, REO Speedwagon.  Just making some observations.  I guarantee that there were people bitching about all the stuff I enjoyed when I was a kid.  It’s not like most of the music I listened to was embraced by my church community.  And being obsessed with recording music off the radio was a questionable life decision.  Actually, I don’t think that’s changed much.  What was my point again, REO Speedwagon?  Right, the top ten songs!    The bottom line is that I was super excited to hear this song, because I loved and still love you guys so much.  One might say I’m going to keep on lovin’ you.

“Keep On Loving You”

<awesome REO Speedwagon jam>

Ya should have seen by the look in my eyes, baby

There was somethin’ missiiinn’

Ya should have known by the tone of my voice, maybe

Butchoo didn’t listen

You played dead

Butcha never bled
Instead you lay still in the grass
All coiled up and hissiiiin’

And though I know all about those men

Still I don’t rememberrrr

‘Cause it was us
Baby, way before then

And we’re still togetherrrrr

And I meant

Every word I said
When I said that I love you, I meant
That I’d love ya foreverrrrrrrr

And I’m gonna keep on lovin’ yooou
‘Cause it’s the only thing I wanna dooooo

I don’t wanna sleep
I just wanna keep on lovin’ yooooooou

<awesome REO Speedwagon jam>

And I meant
Every word I said
When I said that I love you, I meant
That I’d love you foreverrrrrrrr

And I’m gonna keep on lovin’ yoooou
‘Cause it’s the only thing I wanna doooooo

I don’t wanna sleep
I just wanna keep on lovin’ yooooooou

Baby, I’m gonna keep on lovin’ yooou
‘Cause it’s the only thing I wanna doooo

I don’t wanna sleep
I just wanna keep on lovin’ yooooooooooooooooou
