Radio 56, side A, track 8: “Centerfold” by The J. Geils Band, #9 on The Top 90 of the ’80s

The J. Geils Band - CenterfoldOh, The J. Geils Band, I’m not going to pretend that I’m high-minded and above it all.  Not today, anyway.  I won’t deny that while I love this song because it’s just a great song, from the first time I heard it, I was celebrating the amazing story this guy told about how his high school crush ended up in the pages of a girly magazine.  You would think after yesterday’s post that from now on I’d write nothing but sensitive screeds, but no, I can’t deny that I still very much understand this guy’s excitement at the situation he found himself in.  It reminds me of the first centerfold I ever saw.  No, I didn’t recognize the girl who was posing.  But it was around third grade or something near, and I was at a classmate’s house, and he and I snuck into his parents’ bedroom and he pulled out a copy of Playboy from one of the clothes drawers and opened it right on up to the middle.  I still remember her pretty vividly.  She was the first naked woman I’d seen, so it made an impression.  She had red hair, and since this was the ’80s, it was big hair.  And it also left me more than a little confused, since I actually wasn’t real familiar with female anatomy.  I understood breasts well enough, but beyond that, I really had no idea, and that Playboy centerfold didn’t illuminate much.  For one thing, I just didn’t understand what I was seeing.  For another, I really didn’t have time to study it, since my buddy stashed it back into the dresser drawer almost as fast he had taken it out.  It would be awhile before I saw another Playboy.  I think the next issue I got a hold of featured the Swedish Bikini Team, which may have been a bit of overkill.  And I still don’t think I fully understood what the female body was all about.  Frankly, I still don’t, The J. Geils Band.

“Centerfold”

<awesome J. Geils Band jam>

Come on

Does she walk
Does she talk
Does she come complete

My homeroom homeroom angel always pulled me from my seat

She was pure like snowflakes no one could ever stain

The memory of my angel
Could never cause me pain

Years go by, I’m lookin’ through a girly magazine
And there’s my homeroom angel on the pages in between

My blood runs cold
My memory has just been sold
My angel is the centerfold
(Angel is the centerfold)

My blood runs cold (woo)
My memory has just been sold

(Angel is the centerfold)

Slipped me notes under the desk
While I was thinkin’ about her dress
I was shy, I turned away before she caught my eye

I was shakin’ in my shoes whenever she flashed those baby blues
Somethin’ had a hold on me when angel passed close by

Those soft, fuzzy sweaters
Too magical ta touch

To see her in that negligée is really just too much

My blood runs cold
Yeah, my memory has just been sold
My angel is the centerfold
(Angel is the centerfold)

My blood runs cold
My memory has just been sold

Oh yeah
(Angel is the centerfold)

(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)
(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)
(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)
(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)
Yeah, now listen
It’s okay, I understand
This ain’t no Never-Never Land
I hope that when this issue’s gone I see you when ya clothes are on

Take your car, yes we will
We’ll take your car and drive it

We’ll take it to a motel room and take ’em off in private

A part of me has just been ripped
The pages from my mind are stripped

Oh no
I can’t deny it
Oh yeah
I guess I gotta buy it
My blood runs cold
My memory has just been sold
My angel is the centerfold
(Angel is the centerfold)

My blood runs cold (woo)
My memory has just been sold

(My angel is the centerfold)

(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)

All right

All right

1, 2, 3, 4

(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)
(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)
(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)
(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)

My blood runs cold
My memory has just been sold
My angel is the centerfold
Angel is the centerfold

My blood runs cold, oh yeah
My memory has just been sold
My angel is the centerfold
Angel is the centerfold

(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)
(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)
(Na na, na na na na, na na na na na na na na na)

Ha! This was my favorite song at the time! But I was young so didn’t know it was a bit dirty. 🙂
