Radio 56, side B, track 10: “Roam” by the B-52’s

The b-52's - RoamOh, the B-52’s, looks like a “new” song slipped in there while I was re-visiting songs I’d JUST revisited.  And it was a “pure” song at that!  PLUS, it ended up being my favorite of your songs that I recorded off the radio.  Which is saying a lot, since I love all your songs so much.  It’s also a bit ironic that this is one of my favorite songs, not just of yours, but of any song ever.  Ironic because the idea of roaming around the world sounds absolutely horrible to me.  We’ll blame it solely on anxiety, the B-52’s.  Because the few times I do travel, I have an okay time, even if it includes some of the most humiliating experiences of my life.  But my anticipatory anxiety knows no bounds.  For example, I’ll be visiting my family in Minnesota next month, which I’ve known about for approximately a year, and I’ve been stressed out about it this whole time.  No reason.  Just faulty genetics that have me worrying over every single detail of every single thing that could possibly happen to me.

Which is probably why I love this song so much, the B-52’s.  I love the idea that in some other reality, I could be this globe-trotting bon vivant who would think nothing of a spontaneous trip around the world.  Who could make friends wherever he goes and be able to experience his experiences instead of always being in his own head and experiencing everything as if watching it on a television.  But that’s not me, the B-52’s.  Hell, I CAN’T roam around the world because I don’t even have a passport.  I’ve had one therapist tell me that this anxiety stuff will slowly cycle itself out of my life.  I will say that with a combination of meds and age, things aren’t QUITE as daunting as they used to be.  So here’s hoping that one day, maybe in the next few decades, I’ll have enough mental health that the idea of seeing the sights in person and not on a TV or in a book will be exhilarating and not terrifying.  And when that day comes, this will be the first song on my playlist.

“Roam”

I hear a wind
Whistlin’ air
Whisperin’
In my ear

<awesome the B-52’s jam>

Boy mercury
Shootin’ through every degreeee

Oh, girl, dancin’ down those dirty and dusty traaaails
Take it hip ta hip
Rockin’ through the wilderneeeeeeess
Around the world the trip begins with a kiiiiiiiiss

Roam if you want to
Roam around the wooorld
Roam if you want to
Without anything but the love we feeeeeeel

Skip
The air-strip
To the suuuunseeeet
Yeah, ride
The arrow
To the taaargeeeeet
Take it hip ta hip
Rockin’ through the wilderneeeeeeess
Around the world the trip begins with a kiiiiiiiiss

Roam if you want to
Roam around the woooorld
Roam if you want to
Without anything but the love we feeeeeeel

<awesome the B-52’s jam>

Fly
The great big sky
See the greeeat big seeea

Kick through
Continents
Bustin’ bouuundariiiiies
Take it hip ta hip
Rockin’ through the wilderneeeeeeess
Around the world the trip begins with a kiiiiiiiiss

Roam if you want to
Roam around the woooorld
Roam if you want to
Without wings
Without wheels
Roam if you want to
Roam around the woooorld
Roam if you want to
Without anything but the love we feeeeeeel

Take it hip ta hip
Rockin’ through the wilderneeess

Come on!

Take it hip ta hip

Thanks for sharing! I love it when I find some old gem of a song that I never knew existed, especially if I felt like I already knew all of the band’s other songs. It’s kind of like finding an easter egg in December, haha.
