Radio 57, side B, track 11: “Escapade” by Janet Jackson

Janet Jackson - EscapadeOh, Janet Jackson, the most exciting thing about this song, besides that I got to record an awesome new Janet Jackson song off the radio, was that halfway through the song you randomly yell out “Minneapolis!”  I actually didn’t know that’s what you were yelling out, but one of my friends and I were discussing this song on the bus on the way to school and she told me what it was and my mind was blown.  I’d BEEN to Minneapolis, Janet Jackson!  And if you were yelling it out in a song ON THE RADIO (!), that meant you’d probably been there, too!  It was a pretty big deal for me to know that I’d been in the same city as Janet Jackson.  While I was always intimidated by Minneapolis and St. Paul because they were the biggest cities I could comprehend at the time, Minnesota just didn’t seem like the kind of place where anything cool happened.  Sure, I grew up watching “Little House On The Prairie” (still one of my favorite TV shows), which took place about 45 minutes from where I lived, but it was also set 100 years in the past.  And Rose on “The Golden Girls” was from Minnesota, but she was always such a dingbat that it didn’t really make Minnesotans look very cool.  So to have you of all people celebrating one of our cities in such a kick-ass song, well, that was a pretty big deal, Janet Jackson.  And while I didn’t have a paycheck to cash and didn’t really have weekends off as such, if you wanted to go on an escapade with me to Minneapolis, I absolutely would have done that.  You would just have to be the one who drove.  Let’s go!
