Radio 57, side B, track 13: “Show Don’t Tell” by Rush

Rush - Show Don't TellOh, Rush, I’ve had a love/hate relationship with you all my life.  It started out as love.  This was the first song I’d ever heard by you, or at least where I knew it was you. . .actually, I might not have even known it was you, but point being, I loved this song.  Plus you sang the theme song to “The Great White North” with Bob and Doug McKenzie, of which I had a copy of a tape of that particular album and have listened to it over and over and over throughout the years.

But my freshman year of college, I had a roommate who loved you guys.  No, that’s not the right word.  He worshiped you.  Once he started talking about you, he wouldn’t stop for a looooong time.  To the point where I grew to hate you just on principle.  Had he not slobbered all over you every time the word “rush” came up (seriously, if just the word came up, he would go bananas, even if we weren’t actually talking about you, which I never did, because I didn’t want my roommate’s head to explode), I probably would have enjoyed your music just fine.  But because of his over-enthusiasm, I swore off anything by you for over a decade.

PLUS, my roommate had framed posters of your albums all over the wall, and one night while I was having a nightmare involving a monster chasing me, right when the monster leaped at me, one of the frames fell off the wall and an edge hit me on the hand right where the monster was biting me.  It was very scary, Rush.

Anyway, I’ve had some time to reflect, and I think it’s time that I let my old animosities about you go away.  I’m not going to dive right back in and listen to a ton of your music all at once, but this song is a good start.  Let’s see where this new tentative friendship will lead us, Rush.

“Show Don’t Tell”

<awesome Rush jam>

How many times do you hear it

It goes on all day long

Everyone knows everything

And no one’s ever wrong

Until later

Who can you believe

It’s hard to play it safe

But apart from a few good friends

We don’t take anything on faith

Until later

Show (show)

Don’t tell (don’t tell)

Show me, don’t tell me
You’ve figured out the score
Show me, don’t tell me
I’ve heard it all before
Show me, don’t tell me
I don’t care what you say
Show me, don’t tell me

You can twist perceptions

Reality won’t budge

You can raise objections

I will be the judge

And the jury

I’ll give it due reflection

Watching from the fence

Give the jury direction

Based on the evidence

I, the jury

Show (show)
Don’t tell (don’t tell)

Show me, don’t tell me
Hey, order in the court
Show me, don’t tell me
Let’s try ta keep it short
Show me, don’t tell me
Enough of your demands
Show me, don’t tell me
Witness, take the stand
Show me, don’t tell me

<awesome Rush jam>

Show (show)
Don’t tell (don’t tell)

Show (show)
Don’t tell (don’t tell)

Show me, don’t tell me
Hey, order in the court
Show me, don’t tell me
Let’s try ta keep it short
Show me, don’t tell me
I don’t care what you say
Show me, don’t tell me
Let’s see exhibit A
