Radio 58, side A, track 12: “I Wish It Would Rain Down” by Phil Collins

Phil Collins - I Wish It Would Rain DownOh, Phil Collins, I know this song is all about the end of a relationship and that the whole wishing it would rain down is like a metaphor or something, but yes, I totally wish it would rain down.  Having lived in Texas for over a decade now in the middle of a drought, I never truly understood the beauty of rain.  Oh, I enjoyed the rain well enough, although half the time it was accompanied by crazy-ass thunderstorms dragging tornadoes with it or it was freezing rain just waiting to ice over the highways and kill you.  And my dad, being a farmer and all, was absolutely obsessed with the rain, keeping logs of how many tenths of an inch we’d receive and what that meant for the crops.  Plus, you couldn’t watch “Little House On The Prairie” (still one of my favorite shows) and not get anxious over Pa fretting about the lack of or too much of the rain.  Actually, my own pa fretted over the rain just as much as Pa Ingalls, but it’s not so scary when it’s on TV and not sitting at your kitchen table agonizing over the fact that our entire livelihood depended on clouds.  On the bright side, if my dad and I ever run out of things to talk about, we always have the weather.  That’s actually pretty much all we do talk about.

Anyway, my point is, Phil Collins, is that I am never taking rain for granted again.  Even though we got a nice healthy deluge earlier this year, the yards are scorched and the ground’s cracking open again and my trees are looking a little desperate.  Part of it’s my fault, because I pretty much refuse to water, since I find that watering grass so it looks nice in the middle of a drought is pretty much the height of insanity.  Even though that doesn’t stop me from taking a nice, luxurious hot shower every morning.  Which I guess is the height of hypocrisy.  Whatever, Phil Collins, we’re not talking about me.  We’re talking about the rain.

By the way, my wife’s been talking about the fact that we need to have a water pipeline throughout the country similar to oil pipelines, which was recently also suggested by William Shatner.  I love the fact that my wife and Captain Kirk had the same idea.  All of my favorite things are becoming one.  It is a good idea, though, Phil Collins.

I’ve actually become a bit neurotic about the rain.  It kind of kills me watching rain washing away down gutters and just lying on the hot tarry streets.  We NEED that rain, dammit!  Don’t let it just wash away!!!

OK, I need to calm myself down.  Ya know what would be great, Phil Collins, is if we could make it rain by just pointing a boom box up at the sky and blasting this song up to the heavens while we did a little rain dance.  Except I’m not willing to get my boom box or my cassette tape with this song on it wet.  I’m willing to make some sacrifices, but let’s not go crazy.

“I Wish It Would Rain Down”

  1. A beautiful rip off of Pink Floyds Wish You Were Here. Great guitar by Eric Clapton too! Classic

I had no idea Clapton was involved! Raised this song up a few more notches for me.

  3. […] Belinda Carlisle, two songs about the rain back to back?  Totally didn’t plan that, Belinda Carlisle, but that’s the fun of recording music […]
