Radio 58, side B, track 12: “Birdhouse In Your Soul” by They Might Be Giants

TMBG - Birdhouse In Your SoulOh, They Might Be Giants, this is it.  This is the moment where everything changed for me.  This is the moment where I was introduced to you, the band who would become my favorite band of any band that ever existed.  I’m pretty sure I’d heard this once before I actually was able to record it off the radio, and those were the only two times that I’d ever heard this song.  I was enthralled.  I was hypnotized.  I was instantly in love.

I’d never heard anything like this before, They Might Be Giants.  It was upbeat and strange and odd and wonderful.  If any band ever spoke to me, it was you, They Might Be Giants.  The first cassette I ever bought by you was the album this song is from, “Flood”.  I bought it at the hardware store in Pipestone, which is where one bought their music, because there was no such thing as a music store anywhere near where I lived.  So you went to the hardware store, which sold not just farm implements but toys and clothing and luckily for me, cassette tapes by you, They Might Be Giants.  I couldn’t believe my luck when I found that tape, and I listened to it a million billion times.  I’ve heard this song and “Your Racist Friend” and “Twisting” and “Sapphire Bullets Of Pure Love” so many times that when I die, if someone were to place their ear against my chest, you’ll probably be able to hear all those songs and more because they settled into the very marrow of my bones.

My first girlfriend bought me “Apollo 18” at an actual music store in Sioux Falls.  Somewhere I picked up tapes for “Lincoln” and your self-titled album.  In college I got my first CD by y’all, the wonderful “John Henry”.  I’ve listened to “No!” over and over and over and I adore “Here Come The ABC’s”.  When I first moved to Austin, the very first movie I watched was “Gigantic” at the Dobie Theatre, which is when I knew that I had moved to the right place.  I love to sing “Some crazy bastard wants to hit me” and “Experimental Film” is fan-damn-tastic and “I Can Hear You” is brilliant.

I haven’t been as good keeping up with your stuff the last several years, but when I die, I think it would be ideal if all they play is your music at my memorial service.  Because even when the lyrics are dark and sad, it still sounds joyful and amazing.  I’ve told a lot of artists that I love them on this blog, They Might Be Giants, and I’ve meant it, but what I feel for you is beyond love.  You are the reason that music was invented.  You truly are the birdhouse in my soul.

“Birdhouse In Your Soul”

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over yooou
Make a little birdhouse in yer soul, not ta put too fine a point on it
Say I’m the only bee in yer bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul

I have a secret to tell
From my electrical well
It’s a simple message and I’m leaving out the whistles and bells
So the room must listen to me
Filibuster vigilantly
My name is Blue Canary, one note spelled l-i-t-e

My story’s infinite
Like the Longines Symphonette, it doesn’t rest

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over yooou
Make a little birdhouse in yer soul, not ta put too fine a point on it
Say I’m the only bee in yer bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in yer soul

<awesome They Might Be Giants jam>

I’m yer only friend, I’m notcher only friend, but I’m a little glowing friend, but really I’m not actually your friend, but I am

There’s a picture opposite me
Of my primitive ancestry
Which stood on rocky shores and kept the beaches shipwreck free

Though I respect that a lot
I’d be fired if that were my job
After killing Jason off and countless screaming Argonauts

Bluebird of friendliness
Like guardian angels it’s always near

Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
Who watches over yooou
Make a little birdhouse in yer soul, not ta put too fine a point on it
Say I’m the only bee in yer bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul

While you’re at it
Keep the nightlight on inside the birdhouse in your soul

Not ta put too fine a point on it
Say I’m the only bee in yer bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in yer soul
Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch (while you’re at it)
Who watches over yooou (keep the nightlight on inside the birdhouse in your soul)
Make a little birdhouse in yer soul
Not ta put too fine a point on it
Say I’m the only bee in yer bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in yer soul
Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch (while you’re at it)
Who watches over yooou (keep the nightlight on inside the birdhouse in your soul)
Make a little birdhouse in yer soul
Not ta put too fine a point on it
Say I’m the only bee in yer bonnet
Make a little birdhouse in your soul

  2. […] not like I’m exactly taking any giant stand on anything.  Other than my love of the music of They Might Be Giants, that is.  It becomes more of a struggle as I approach. . .I was going to say “approach […]
