Radio 59, side A, track 5: “Heaven Is A Place On Earth” by Belinda Carlisle

Belinda Carlisle - Heaven Is A Place On EarthOh, Belinda Carlisle, I was taught as a kid that heaven would be a place on earth, but I think I was accidentally reading literature by Jehovah’s Witnesses.  Nothing against the Jehovah’s Witnesses, Belinda Carlisle, but I was raised to fear and be annoyed by them.  One of my earliest memories is of my dad hiding in the bedroom with my brother and me when a couple of them showed up out at the farm to spread the good Word.  How terrifying must these folks be if my dad was hiding from them, right?

Anyway, I was an avid reader as a kid, Belinda Carlisle, and a lot of the books I read were based on the Bible.  One of my favorites was this book with a beautiful golden leather cover with really striking, detailed illustrations recounting various Bible stories.  One of them was a discussion about how Jesus was going to come back to Earth and re-form it into a paradise.  It sounded quite lovely, and for a long time that’s what I thought the End Times was going to end up being.  Then I mentioned it one day to my parents, who looked at me strangely and asked where I heard that and I showed them the book.  It was then that it was discovered that the book was given to me by some distant cousins who were/are in fact Jehovah’s Witnesses.

Now, this wasn’t some sneaky conspiracy to brainwash me or anything, Belinda Carlisle.  My parents were there when I got that book.  I just don’t think they were really thinking about it.  And my grandma, a devout Lutheran, had issues of The Watchtower laying around her house, probably given to her by those same cousins.  Point being, between reading that book, half paying attention in Sunday School, watching tons of movies and TV shows, reading thousands of books, many with biblical themes, even if I was a religious man, I’m kinda not sure what my beliefs would be anyway.  I will say nothing mentioned this song.  And that’s a sin.

“Heaven Is A Place On Earth”

Ooo, baby, do ya know what that’s worth

Ooo, heaven is a place on earth

They say in heaven
Love comes first

We’ll make heaven a place on earth
