Radio 59, side A, track 7: “I Wanna Be Rich” by Calloway

Calloway - I Wanna Be RichOh, Calloway, as soon as I first heard this song, I appreciated your blatant honesty.  Plus the song’s great, too.  And I agree, I wanna be rich as well, Calloway.  But who’re we kidding?  The more money I’d get, the more money I’d spend.  My dad’s side of the family is extremely frugal, and I clearly did not get that gene.  I spend money faster than I can get it.  It was all right during high school where I had a limited amount of income, but then college hit, and there were all these credit card companies handing out free money.  Well, that’s what it seemed like to me, anyway.  You mean I can buy a bunch of stuff and then only pay $10 a month for shit I didn’t earn?  Amazing!

Of course, I always start out with the best of intentions.  I’m totally going to pay off my balance every month.  I’ll just put a few purchases on it, you know?  Sensible things.  Groceries, that kinda stuff.  Well, I mean, I might need to get a few comics.  And there was that Spider-Man T-shirt.  Plus there’s this great sale on books.

That’s the thing, Calloway, I don’t blow all my money on giant purchases, it’s really more a death by a thousand cuts.  And a thousand dollars.  Why buy McDonald’s with cash when you could pay interest on it for ten years instead, you know?  It doesn’t help that I’m both a stress eater and a stress shopper.  The advent of online shopping was the best and worst thing that’s ever happened to me.  At least before I’d have to leave the house to buy things, which I resisted doing.  But now I don’t even have to put any clothes on and still run up giant amounts of debt.

I blame “Wheel Of Fortune”, Calloway.  When I was a kid, after every round, the winner would get to buy things from the prize room, and Pat would tell them how much money they’d have left.  Like “I’ll get that washer/dryer set”  “OK.  You’ve got $1500 left.”  “All right, I’ll get that bike. . .”  And so on and so forth.  And like it or not, that’s what I see my credit limit as.  Not as a warning but as a challenge.  It’s absolutely, completely stupid, Calloway.  I know it is.  But it’s not going to stop me from shelling out unearned money for a Spidey statue.  So yes, Calloway, I wanna be rich, but I also want love, peace and happiness, and it seems like those two things are mutually exclusive.  Though I’m happy to test that theory out.

“I Wanna Be Rich”

Cash

Cold

That’s what I need

<awesome Calloway jam>

Whooooooooa

Whooooooooa

<awesome Calloway jam>

These bill collectors they ring my phone (ring a ling a ling)
They bother me when I’m not at home

Ain’t got no time to be fooling ’round

Feet touch the floor then I get on down

You see
I want money
Lots and lots of money
I want the pie in the sky

I want money
Lots and lots of money
So don’t be askin’ me why

I wanna be rich

Ohhhh

I wanna be rich

Oh ohhhh
I wanna be rich

Ohhhh

I wanna be rich

Full of love, peace and happiness

Oh oh

I want my cake, wanna eat it, too

I want the stars and the silver moon

I spend my money on lottery

My favorite number is 1 2 3

Ya see
I want money
Lots and lots of money
I want the pie in the sky

Whoa, I want money
Lots and lots of money
So don’t be askin’ me why

I wanna be rich

Ohhhh

I wanna be rich

Oh ohhhh

I wanna be rich (la la la la la la la)
Ohhhh

I wanna be rich

Full of love, peace and happiness

Every way rich

Love, peace, and happiness

I want all the things that lovers do

A pocketful of dreams come true (dreams come true)
Even things you can not find
Wancha by my side
Ta keep you satisfied
And rich

<awesome Calloway jam>

Here’s what ya gonna do

Say ah
Say oh ho oh

Woo woo woo

Whoooooooooa

Whoooooooooa

Got ta be, baby

I just want ta be rich

I just wanna be (just wanna be)

‘Cause baby
I want money
Lots and lots of money (lotsa lotsa money)
I want the pie in the sky (ohhhhhhhh)
I want money
Lots and lots of money (ohhhhhhhh)
So don’t be askin’ me why

I wanna be rich (la la la la la la la)

I wanna be rich (la la la la la la la)

Ya know what I mean
I wanna be rich (la la la la la la la)

Every day in every way
I wanna be rich (la la la la la la la)
Full of love, peace and happiness
