Radio 60, side B, track 1: “Get A Life” by Soul II Soul

Soul II Soul - Get A LifeOh, Soul II Soul, here’s another great example of why I loved my radio station so much, even moreso in hindsight.  I don’t know if this was ever actually a top 40 hit, and if it was, good on you, Soul II Soul.  The radio waves are not as kind to music that sounds a little different and that has deeper lyrics than your typical songs about relationships, rock and roll, and/or partying.  Hell, Soul II Soul, the chorus on this one is literally asking what the meaning of life is.  But regardless of the popularity of this song, and I guarantee that where I grew up was not a Soul II Soul kinda crowd, this was on the airwaves anyway.

Frankly, this song might be a little too deep for a Monday.  Who am I kidding, Soul II Soul?  I’m about as deep as a puddle, so this song would likely be too much for me on any day of the week.  But I do love it, probably even more than I did when I first recorded it off the radio.  And I appreciate that you think I’m capable of elevating my mind and freeing my soul.  And back then, I probably was more inclined to do so.  But I’ll be honest with you, Soul II Soul, elevating one’s mind and freeing one’s soul is really exhausting, plus I’m afraid of heights and I like having everything in its place, so I’m going to stay right here in front of my computer writing about songs from my youth, watching some TV (but no news.  never the news, Soul II Soul), and pretending that listening to songs like this are enough to make me a real deep thinker.

“Get A Life”

<awesome Soul II Soul jam>

This thing called life

Know what’s the meanin’ of the line
(Tell me)

Well, it’s like dreamin’ of ya goals, ambitions for feelin’ free, I’m on this mission to achieve
(Achieve what)

What’s in ya mind’s eye
This is whatchoo believe
You should gain
Uh-huh

Satisfaction becomes
A shining example, a test is a sample of a new race
That has ample supply of positivity
(Ya mean flow)
Well, like electricity, so
Ya see a clear way with no ambiguity, doncha know

What’s the meaning
What’s the meaning of life
What’s the meaning
What’s the meaning of life

Elevate’cha mind
Free ya soul
(Come on, come on)
Feel the feelin’, letcho body take control
(Aw, yeah)
Elevate’cha mind
Free ya soul
(Come on, come on)
Feel the feelin’, letcho body take control
Well, don’t be afraid
To experiment, cha know
Hm, go ahead, ya know and implementcha ideas, ya notions, put ’em in motion
Like the words the funky dreads have spoken ta you
So listen up loud and clear
This is a word
You must be aware of
Whatcha gonna do, put it in ya life tool
And that’s the meaning of the line

What’s the meaning
What’s the meaning of life
What’s the meaning
What’s the meaning of life
And it goes

Elevate’cha mind
Free ya soul
(Come on, come on)
Feel the feelin’, letcho body take control
(Aw, yeah)
Elevate’cha mind
And free yo soul
(Come on, come on)
Feel the feelin’, letcho body take control

So there it is

Work it out for yourself

Yeah, be selective, be objective

Be an asset to the collective

As you know you gotta get a life

<awesome Soul II Soul jam>

Elevate’cha mind
Free ya soul
(Come on, come on)
Feel the feelin’, letcho body take control
(Aw, yeah)
Elevate’cha mind
Free ya soul
(Come on, come on)
Feel the feelin’, letcho body take control
