Radio 60, side B, track 9: “Under My Thumb” by Sam Kinison

Sam Kinison - Under My ThumbOh, Sam Kinison, I remember being a little disappointed in this track when I first heard it.  Not because it wasn’t good.  I would imagine it’s pretty hard to mess up a faithful cover of a Stones tune.  But that was the thing.  This was a straight-up cover of a Stones tune.  I remember being surprised to find out at the end of this track that it was actually you singing this one.  Because I figured if you were going to have a song on the radio, it was going to be similar to your version of “Wild Thing” that I adored so much, with you going off on your screaming tangents about how much you hated whoever it was you were singing about.

But none of that on this one, Sam Kinison, just you wailing righteously on a righteous rock song.  Listening to it after all these years, I very much appreciate the way you scream out “Under my thumb!”, mostly because I can tell how good it feels every time you scream it out.  It’s one of those phrases that just fits perfectly into your vocal range, so every time you get to sing/scream/shout it is a little treat both for you and for us.

Of course, the downside of being older and paying more attention to the stuff I’m listening to is the overt misogyny in both your radio hits and your comedy.  My wife recently asked me to read an article by a fellow blogger called “The Thing All Women Do That You Don’t Know About”.  And I did.  Because I’m a good husband. Sometimes.  Anyway, I read the article and it was very thought-provoking and was also depressing as hell.  As I’ve mentioned before, I’ve only recently realized how woefully ignorant I’ve been about women pretty much my whole life.  Which is pretty sad, since I’ve always felt I’ve gotten along better with women than I have with men.  As I was reading the article, I was initially thinking “Well, I’ve never done that stuff”.  But I know I’ve cornered a girl or two when I was drunk.  I guarantee my eyes have wandered where they probably shouldn’t.  I don’t know if I’ve catcalled, and I’m pretty sure I’ve never told a random girl to smile when she looked sad, but I’m sure there are a ton of things I’ve done that I wasn’t aware of that caused fear or anxiety or some other unpleasant emotion in a woman.  I also love you, Sam Kinison, and I still love Al Bundy/”Married. . .With Children” and I enjoy this song about gleefully forcing a girl into submission.  Going forward, I’m gonna have to ask myself just why I enjoy all those things, Sam Kinison.  But for today, I’m just going to be nice to my wife and call it good.

“Under My Thumb”

<awesome Sam Kinison jam>

Under my thumb

A girl who

Once had me down

Under my thumb

A girl

Pushed me around

It’s down ta me

Yeah

The difference in the clothes she wears, down ta me
A change has come
She’s under my thumb!

Under my thumb!

Under my thumb!

A squirmin’ dog

Just had her day

Under my thumb

A girl who

Has just changed her ways

It’s down ta me, yes it is, yeah

The way she does just what she’s told, down ta me
The change has come
She’s under my thumb!

Under my thumb!

Under my thumb!

<awesome Sam Kinison jam>

It’s down ta me

The way she speaks when she’s spoken to, down ta me
A change has come
She’s under my thumb!

Under my thumb!

Under my thumb!

A siamese cat

Of a girl

Under my thumb

She’s the sweetest pet

In the world

It’s down ta me, yeah, yeeeah, yeah

The way she talks when she’s spoken to, down ta me
A change has come
She’s under my thumb!

Under my thumb!

Under my thumb!
