Oh, Vixen, so many thoughts as I listen to this track. First thing, SO happy to hear your voices again! It’s been nearly two years since I’ve had one of your songs on here, and that’s just far too long. What a way to kick off a brand new tape! At the time I recorded this off the radio, it was almost September and almost time to go back to school. I was about to be a freshman in high school and I was about to turn a whole 15 years old!
But we’ll likely talk more about that later. What really struck me about this track, besides how bad-ass this song is, was the fat-shaming going on about Delta Burke, or “Delta Bulk”, as the DJ called her. I’d totally forgotten about Stubie Doak. More like Stubie Dick, right, Vixen? Now, I’m not going to pretend that at the time I didn’t think it was funny, and I’m sure that I probably repeated that “Delta Bulk” joke and thought it was hilarious at the time. But looking back at it now, what a horrible thing to say. And to have that joke right before a song by some very empowered women just ain’t right.
I can tell you this, Vixen, Julia Sugarbaker would have torn Stubie Doak a new one. And probably made fun of his name, too. That name, combined with that obnoxious persona, I think Stubie Doak was even more annoying than Molson. And that’s saying something. But at least he knew how to play great music.
