Oh, Vanilla Ice, word to YOUR mother! In case no one believed it, this is proof that your song was indeed a huge-ass hit when I was in high school, since this particular track had it as the #1 song on the weekly top 30 countdown. There have been a lot of jokes about this song since then, Vanilla Ice, and I’ve probably contributed some myself. But it’s all selective memory. Because this song was a big-ass deal and everyone listened to it all the time and everybody loved it even if they don’t want to admit it now.
I’ll gladly admit it. I think this is a great song, and I was most definitely shouting out “Yo, VIP!” and “Word to your mother” and “cookin’ MCs like a pound of bacon” pretty frequently in 1990. I didn’t know a lot of the words, and even those I did, I didn’t actually fully understand (for example, the significance of an 8 ball, which I thought referred to billiards, maybe it means only shady people hang out at pool halls. . .?), but I did know that I thought you were indeed a lyrical genius, Vanilla Ice. And this was BEFORE “Ninja Rap” and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles sequel. We won’t talk about “Cool As Ice”. . .
