Radio 77, side B, track 2: “She Drives Me Crazy” by Fine Young Cannibals

FYC - She Drives Me CrazyOh, Fine Young Cannibals, it’s great to hear from you again!  It’s been since, like, 1989.  You know, this is going to sound like one of the most ignorant statements ever considering this is a blog devoted to music, but it wasn’t until just now that I really understood what it means to make music.

I’m not a musician by any means.  And my understanding of music doesn’t go much beyond “I know what I like” (which was actually my very first post), and in my simple mind, making music was just playing an instrument and/or singing.  But I never really comprehended what it meant to really make music or produce it or whatever it’s called.

But as I was reading a little bit about the origins of this song, I finally really got it.  Reading about the process of making the distinct sounds on this excellent song, involving a wooden ruler and a specific microphone and a snare drum and different speakers and something about kHz. . .I get it, Fine Young Cannibals.  The thing that drives me to collect every issue of The Amazing Spider-Man or to sit for hours on end latch hooking my latest yarn masterpiece, it’s that same OCD (or FYC) that drives y’all.  Where I’ll obsess over a specific color yarn, you will sit for hours on end making a sound until you’ve made it the precise sound you want it to be.

I don’t know why it’s taken me this long for it to truly sink in for me.  After all, I sat obsessively in front of my stereo for hours at a time making sure I didn’t miss any song the radio saw fit to give me and my beloved tapes.  And if I was willing to make that kind of commitment just recording your music, of COURSE you and all your musical brethren were going to be spending that much more time to make sure that the songs coming out of my sixth-grade speakers sounded exactly right.

I can see how that kind of obsessive commitment might drive one crazy.  But as one of your far less talented creative types, it’s pretty much the best kind of crazy to be.
