Radio 78, side B, track 10: “I’m Alright” by Kenny Loggins

Kenny Loggins - I'm AlrightOh, Kenny Loggins, so many memories of this song.  Obviously the first is “Caddyshack”.  I think the first time I ever saw “Caddyshack” was at Dar’s Pizza in Pipestone when it was playing on the TV.  I feel like we went to Dar’s a lot when I was a kid; my parents would meet up with fellow farmers/church members/neighbors and when I tired of watching the other kids play air hockey or Ralstan or pinball games (because I’d already blown the two quarters my parents gave me) I’d watch what was on the tube.

I’m sure it’s not surprising, but as a kid, my favorite part of “Caddyshack” was the gopher.  I remember being fascinated with Bill Murray’s clay animals as he was plotting the little guy’s demise and I was especially entranced by the scene where he tries to drown him with a hose.  At some point, one of my cousins and I tried the same tactic at a campground when we were trying to capture a striped gopher.  My cousin put a hose down a gopher hole and I was at another gopher hole with a bucket over it, expecting the gopher to gush into it along with a giant eruption of water.  You’ll be shocked to hear that there was no gopher nor a geyser of water, Kenny Loggins.

In my twenties, I worked at an animal shelter as a supervisor for several years and I had a boss who was pretty awful.  At one point, I bought her a dancing gopher as an apology gift for one of the random falling-outs we had (it was a very dysfunctional work environment, Kenny Loggins).  And obviously the dancing gopher played this song while it was dancing.  I remember she really liked it.  Or so she said.  It did not permanently heal our relationship, though.  I’m currently on the outs with another boss.  Several of them, actually.  It seems to be a pattern.  It does make me wonder if the problem might actually be with me.  Maybe I need to buy some more dancing gophers, Kenny Loggins?  No, Kenny Loggins, I feel pretty confident that it’s not me.  Or maybe it is.  I don’t know.  I think most people (other than my actual bosses) think that I’m alright.

Dip dip dip dip dip dip dip dip.
