Radio L, side A, track 3: “Price Of Love” by Bad English

Bad English - Price Of LoveOh, Bad English, let me start off by saying that I really need to give you more credit.  I know it’s not fair, but I had this picture of you guys as kind of a washed-up bunch of rockers trying to make one more album and making a mediocre go of it.  Well, that’s just bullshit, Bad English.  And you can quote me on that.  You guys are damn great, and you know how to sing a hellamazing love ballad.

We’ve been able to hear a bunch of your tunes on here now, and all of them have either rocked hard and/or been a beautiful study of what it means to be in love.  And frankly, Bad English, I wish I’d listened to this song sooner, because this song would have totally made the cut at my wedding.  I could even picture making this our wedding dance.  I mean, I would have had to consult the wife about it, of course, but this is one of the best songs about marriage and/or a long-term committed relationship that I’ve ever heard.

My wife and I actually just had a big-ass fight today about work.  Most of it involved me yelling and her calmly explaining why I was wrong, which is about the norm, and obviously she was (as usual) right (hoping she doesn’t read this sentence or I’m never going to hear the end of it).  Then I took a nap.  And then we hugged it out.  We don’t fight much, and most of our fights are around me going to bed too late because I want to stay up and read comic books, occasionally about work, and more often than not about my many neurotic tics.  But like your song says, we never dream of giving up.  It IS the price of love, Bad English.  My wife and I love each other oodles, but I snore and she. . .well, I actually can’t think of anything she does that isn’t adorable right now, Bad English. . .in case you haven’t figured it out by now, I absolutely got the better end of this deal.

As I was sitting here with my headphones on, listening to this song, watching one of the dogs licking his butt on the couch, then looking at the dishes drying in the sink, then looking at my flabby self in my pajamas tapping at the keyboard, I’m pretty sure that this isn’t the image of wedded bliss I had when I first heard this song when it was #3 on The Phaser Countdown Five.  But it really is, Bad English.  Thanks for reminding me that I’ve got it pretty damn good.

Girl

Sometimes it seems to me

That I don’t say the things I should
Ta you
I act like I’m no good
And you

Wait for me patiently

This house is not a home withoutchoo

It takes two hearts ta share

Your eyes
Will always see through me
And bring me to my knees
And I
Will always turn ta you
You’re everything I neeeeeeeed

And through the good and bad times you have always been there
We hold each other close
You tell me it’s all right

The nights we fight about it
Never dream of givin’ uuuup

That’s the price of loooove

<awesome Bad English jam>

Oh yeah

Love

Sometimes it makes us cry

Forgive me when I get it wrong
Sometimes it’s hard to be that strong

And ohhh

I would do anything

For you I’d turn the stars around

I’d find a way somehow

This time

You’ll see I built
A bridge to you again

Love shines
We’ll sweep away the past
We’re more than lovers
More than friends

And through the good and bad times you have always been there
We hold each other tight
Ya tell me it’s all right

The nights we fight about it
Never think of givin’ uuuup

That’s the price of loooove

<awesome Bad English jam>

Your eyes
Will always see through me
And bring me to my knees
And I
Will always turn ta you
You’re everything I neeeeeeeed

And through the good and bad times you have always been there
We hold each other close
You tell me it’s all right

Sometimes I can’t give enough

That’s the price of looooooooove

That’s the price of loooove

Oh yeah

That’s the price of love

That’s the price

Of loooooove
