Radio 65, side B, track 14: “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door” by Guns N’ Roses

GNR - Knockin on Heaven's DoorOh, Guns N’ Roses, I remember having in-depth discussions about you in junior high around the time this song came out.  Some of my fellow classmates were the youngest in their family and had siblings who were seniors (!) or had even graduated and gone to college (!!), so they were much more worldly than I, being exposed to older kids who knew so much more about life.  And so these classmates would regale me with stories about their siblings who would stay up past my bedtime to watch “Saturday Night Live” (subversive!) or go to keggers (rebellious!) or actually own both “Use Your Illusion I” AND “Use Your Illusion II” (wha. . .?!?!).  We would spend many a noon lunch talking about the genius of GN’R, especially that they were singing songs that were originally written by guys like Bob Dylan.  Of course, I didn’t actually know any of the significance of Bob Dylan at the time, even though I’d grown up listening to him, but my classmates’ siblings thought it was significant so it clearly had to be.  1990 was a pretty heady year for music lovers, Guns N’ Roses, in no small part because awesome songs like this were playing on the radio.
