Oh, Alanis Morissette, first things first, all of my roommates and I were scared to death of you, but we can talk more about that later because I’m pretty sure that “You Oughta Know” is going to show up on here eventually. Second, welcome to the blog! If you want to be transported back to the mid-90s super-fast, all you have to say is your first name, Alanis Morissette. I’ve always loved your music and the first concert I ever went to was yours. And that hasn’t changed, even though at the time, I think I did go through some Alanis over-saturation at one point because this song and “Ironic” were on ALL THE TIME, everywhere I turned.
The nice thing about this blog is that it gives me a few minutes to really listen to my beloved radio songs with just me and my headphones and few distractions. It can be a blessing and a curse. For example, this is the first time I’ve probably really, really listened to this song, and obviously it’s awesome and I appreciate your amazing voice even more. But that forced gasping sound you make after every line. . .I don’t know, Alanis Morissette. At the time, I think we were all enthralled because we’d never heard anything like your music before and your voice was so powerful, and that forced rush of air after every line subliminally made us feel like you were forcing out these emotions to the point where maybe it was strangling you or something. Now, though, living in the age of the hipster, cynical me can’t help but feel it’s just a silly affectation that I can’t unhear now that I’ve noticed it. We’ll see though, Alanis Morrissette. Peace sign.
