Radio XIV, side B, track 7: “Pride (In The Name Of Love)” by U2

U2 - PrideOh, U2, I’ve razzed you before about your pretentiousness, and I still think such razzing is well-deserved.  But having said that, I do respect the fact that you’ve built your career on songs that don’t revolve around kissing boys and/or girls and partying hearty.  And even if you do sing about those things, there’s still a level of gravitas not found in most bands.  And of course most of your songs are like this one, a song about something or someone truly admirable.  And here’s what’s the best thing about you, U2, is that you can perform a song about the assassination of a revered civil rights leader and it’s both a well-written tribute to an important man, but it’s also just a damn good song.

Of course, you always run the danger of people not really understanding what your song’s about and just enjoying it as an awesome song.  Of course in this version of the song, you kinda hit us over the head with who the song is about, but I’ll admit that before I heard it, I kinda didn’t know that this was about anyone or anything in particular.  Just thought it was a great song with some artistic license.  And now that I’m older and understand more of the world, I also listen to it with a sense of chagrin that we have to look to a band from Ireland to sing a beautiful tribute about one of the most important men in modern American history.

“Pride (In The Name Of Love)”

One man come
In the name of love

One man come and go

One man come
He to justify

One man to overthrow

In the name
Of love

What more in the name of love

In the name
Of love
What more in the name of love

One man caught
On a barbed wire fence

One man he resist

One man washed
On an empty beach

One man betrayed
With a kiss

In the name
Of love

What more in the name of love

In the name
Of love

What more in the name of love
Yes!

Shot rings out
In the Memphis sky

Free at last
They took your life
They could not
Take your pride

In the name

Of love

What more in the name of love
