Radio XL, side B, track 12: “Freeway Of Love” by Aretha Franklin

Aretha Franklin - Freeway Of LoveOh, Aretha Franklin, I don’t mean to sound pervy or anything, but is “pink Cadillac” a euphemism for something?  This is something that would have never occurred to me as a young boy when I recorded it off the radio, and in fact this originally came out several years before, and I’d already loved it, so as you can imagine, I was pretty excited to be able to record it on my tapes.  And as I was listening to it again for the first time in a long time, I was once again enjoying listening to your legendary voice singing about riding down the freeway of love in your pink Cadillac.  But then I got to thinking, what exactly is the freeway of love?  It’s a metaphor for something, surely, and if THAT’S a metaphor, then maybe that pink Cadillac might be a euphemism, too.  And then I started noticing some other potential clues.  Like right away, we’re talking about some guy with tight white pants.  Hmmm.  And “We can’t quit ’til we get to the other side”. . .double hmmmm.  “Who knows how far a car can get before you think about your love slowing down”. . .TRIPLE hmmmmm.

I’m just going to say it, Aretha Franklin.  I think this song is about sex.  Like, I’m pretty sure a pink Cadillac is referring to a body part.  That’s crazy graphic, Aretha Franklin!!!

All right, MAYBE I’m reading too much into it, and MAYBE sometimes a pink Cadillac is just a pink Cadillac.  But I kinda don’t think so.  But if your pink Cadillac IS what I’m thinking it might be, I’ll just say this, Aretha Franklin:  you are the classiest lady in history if you can pull off singing what I think you’re singing about and make it sound like a great, family-friendly tour-de-force of Aretha Franklin soul-mazingness.

You’re the best, Aretha Franklin, whether you’re a class act, a dirty, dirty bird, or both.  And I’m really hoping both.

Before you think aboutcha love
Slowin’ down, yeeeeah

Of love, wind’s against our backs

We goin’ ridin’ on the freeeeeway
Of love, in my pink Cadillac

We goin’ ridin’ on the freeeeeway
Of love, wind’s against our baaaack

Of love, in my pink Cadillac

So drop the top, baby

And let’s cruuuuise on into

<awesome Aretha Franklin jam>

City traffic’s movin’ way too slow

Drrrop the pedal and go

Go, come on, baby

Go, do it for me, now

We goin’ ridin’ on the freeeeeway
Of love, wind’s against our back

We goin’ ridin’ on the freeeeeway
Of love, in my pink Cadillac

We goin’ ridin’ on the freeeeeway
Of love, wind’s against our baaaack
