Radio XLII, side B, track 12: “Shower Me With Your Love” by Surface

Surface - Shower Me With Your LoveOh, Surface, now I wanna take a shower.  Not because this song makes me feel dirty or anything.  It’s that this song makes me feel all mellow and relaxed like I feel when I’m in the shower.  Usually.  There is one place in this whole world that is the sacredest of sacred spots and it has nothing to do with any religion.  It’s the bathroom.  The bathroom is the Vegas of the house.  What happens in the bathroom stays in the bathroom.  Whatever you’re doing in there, that’s your time.  If someone’s in the bathroom, they have sanctuary.  That time is theirs to do whatever’s necessary.  Sometimes it might not be pleasant, but no one else shall know of it because it happened in the only safe place in all the world.

It is my firm belief that using the toilet and taking a shower are two activities that exist outside regular space-time.  The time spent doing these things are exempt.  It’s impossible to age while doing these things and you cannot be blamed for being late because you were going to the bathroom or taking a shower for the simple fact that time stood still while these things were happening.  Whether you took a five-minute or two-hour shower is irrelevant because minutes and hours do not exist in the spray of the shower.

I have been accused of spending too much time in the shower since I was a young boy.  I will not apologize, of course, because as Stephen Hawking would attest, shower time doesn’t adhere to time as we know it.  I take a shower every weekday before work.  It’s my reset button.  Whatever is happening in the world or in my life holds no power over me as long as the water is running.  Usually.

The thing about that morning shower is that it can make me or break me.  In general, my mind wanders under the shower spray, thinking about comic books or TV shows or this blog or some dream I had, to the point where sometimes I’ll forget if I shampooed or rinsed or did any of my other shower-time activities.  But sometimes, rarely, the real world trickles in and I’ll start thinking about a meeting I have for the day or a trip I have to take or some other thing that stresses me out and then that’s it, Surface.  I’m done for the day.  I throw in the towel.  After I’ve used it to dry myself off, of course, but THEN I throw in the towel and I just climb back into bed for the day.  Because if the power of the shower can’t keep the bad thoughts out, the day’s not going to get any better.

So thanks for reminding me not just of how great this song is, Surface, but about how much I love indoor plumbing.  It’s something you may have never been thanked for before, but it’s sincerely meant from the bottom of my (generally) squeaky-clean soul.
