Radio XVII, side B, track 12: “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” by Poison

Poison - Every Rose Has Its ThornOh, Poison, this song held sway over the radio airwaves for quite some time in its day.  From what I can recollect, I have it on these here radio tapes at least five times, if not more.  Just like every other teenager across the States, I was transfixed by the simple soulful beauty of this one.  Well, maybe simple, soulful beauty might be overstating it a bunch, Poison.  Don’t get me wrong, it’s a beautiful song, and it still holds up great after all these years.  I still sing along with it with pride.  But let’s be honest, the lyrics aren’t exactly breaking any new ground here, fellas.  In fact, I’m going to say that one of the reasons that this song was so popular was that us guys who wanted to be rock stars despite any musical talent could see a small glimmer of hope that we too could some day turn the ladies into mush with our song-writing abilities.  Because when you look at the lyrics, some of it feels like you forgot about a poetry assignment in English class and had to scribble something down on the bus before school.  “Every rose has its thorn. . .every night has its dawn. . .um. . .every cowboy sings a sad, sad song. . .”  No offense, Poison.  It’s easy for me to sit here and razz you, of course, and let’s be honest, it’s all just petty jealousy on my part anyway.  You guys and this song are awesome.

“Every Rose Has Its Thorn”

We both lie silently still in the dead of the night

Although we both lie close together
We feel miles apart inside

Was it somethin’ I said or somethin’ I did
Did my words not come out right

Though I tried not ta hurt you
Though I tried
But I guess that’s why they say every rose has its thorn

Just like every night
Has its dawn

Just like every cowboy
Sings his sad, sad song

Every rose has its thorn
(Yeah, it does)

<awesome Poison jam>

I listen to our favorite song
Playin’ on the radio

Hear the DJ say love’s a game of easy come and
Easy go

But I wonder
Does he know
Has he ever felt like this

And I know that you’d be here right now if I
Could’a let ya know somehow, I guess every rose has its thorn

Just like every night
Has its dawn

Just like every cowboy
Sings his sad, sad song

Every rose has its thooooorn

Though it’s been a while now
I can still feel so much pain

Like the knife that cuts ya, the wound heals
But the scar
That scar remaaaains

<awesome Poison jam>

I know I could’a saved our love that night if I’d
Known what ta say

‘Stead’a makin’ love
We both
Made our separate ways

And now I
Hear ya found somebody new
And that I never meant that much ta you
Ta hear that tears me up inside
Ta see you cuts me
Like a knife, I guess every rose has its thorn

Just like every night
Has its dawn

Just like every cowboy
Sings his sad, sad song

Every rose has its thorn
