Radio XXXIV, side B, track 8: “Once Bitten Twice Shy” by Great White

Great White - Once Bitten Twice ShyOh, Great White, I loved the hell out of this song when I was a kid.  It had this great “screw you” attitude that I would have loved to emulate if I had had more of a backbone backbone then (not saying it’s gotten any stronger now, but you know what I’m saying).  These days, though, I’m super conflicted.  Because it’s still a great song, but as I’m singing along and actually paying attention to the lyrics, I’m starting to realize that this song actually seems kinda like those after-school specials we used to watch as kids.  You remember that one about The Wave and all the kids became a part of The Wave and started discriminating against the kids who weren’t part of The Wave, and then during the high school assembly at the end of the week it was revealed that The Wave was actually emulating the Nazi party and of course all the kids were horrified that they’d become part of The Wave.  I remember being really disturbed watching it as a kid, and I didn’t even really know who Adolph Hitler was at the time.  Also, kind of a horrible experiment to run on kids, am I right, Great White?  The last thing I would have wanted to hear at a time when I’m still some stupid teenager trying to figure out my identity is that I’d unwittingly become a Nazi because my teacher wanted to prove a point.

Also, it just occurred to me that not too many years later Max Headroom wanted us to “Catch the wave”.  Hmmm. . .

Anyway, my point is, Great White, that this song reminds me of one of those after-school specials, this one called something like “I Toured Around With Great White” where the girl has to make some pretty horrifying life decisions to stay on that grey tour bus while the leering band members do stuff with her sister and she ultimately becomes a drug-addled rock star in her own right but is eternally unhappy.  That actually sounds like a really good after-school special, Great White.  And I know just the song for the soundtrack.

“Once Bitten Twice Shy”

<awesome Great White jam>

Well, the times are gettin’ haaard for yooou, little girl
I’m a hummin’ and a strummin’
All over God’s world

You can’t remember when you gotcho last meal
And you don’t know just how a woman feels

You didn’t know what rock and roll was
Until ya met my drummer on a grey tour bus

I got there
In the nick of time
Before he got his hands across ya state line, yeah

<awesome Great White jam>

Now it’s the middle of the night on the open road
The heater don’t work and it’s oh so cold

Ya lookin’ tired
Ya lookin’ kinda beat
Rhythm of the street sure knocks you off ya feet

Ya didn’t know how rock and roll looked
Until ya caughtcha sister with the guys from the group
Halfway home
In the parkin’ lot
By the look in her eye
She was givin’ what she got
Said my, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

My, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

My, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

Woman, you’re a mess, gonna die in ya sleep
There’s blood on my amp
And my Les Paul’s beat

Can’t keep ya home
Ya messin’ around
My best friend told me you’re the best lick in town

Ya didn’t know that rock and roll burned
So ya bought a candle and ya lived and ya learned

You got the rhythm
You got the speed
Mama’s little baby likes it short and sweet
I said my, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

My, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

My, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy, baby

All right!

<awesome Great White jam>

I didn’t know ya had a rock an’ roll record
‘Til I saw ya picture on another guy’s jacket
You told me I was the only one

But look atcha now, it’s dark and you’re gone
Ah my, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

My, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy, baby

My, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy, babe

My, my, my, I’m once bitten, twice shy
