Radio XXV, side B, track 6: “Put A Little Love In Your Heart” by Annie Lennox and Al Green

Annie Lennox and Al Green - Put A Little Love In Your HeartOh, Annie Lennox and Al Green, I know, I know, we JUST listened to this one a couple weeks ago.  What can I say?  I recorded this one a lot.  Can’t we just agree that because I thought this song was so great that this makes me a better person?  Can’t we just use my love of this song as all the criteria we need to prove that I’m an ethically and morally superior person?  No?  You guys are tough, Annie Lennox and Al Green.

As I was listening to this for the umpteenth time, it reminded me of my youth and going to church and how eventually I had to just be resigned to the fact that I was going to hell.  You see, Annie Lennox and Al Green, in my church, there were no official “confirmations” like there were for my friends who were Catholic or Lutheran.  At my church, before you could take Communion, you had to stand in front of the church Elders and confess your faith in God and your belief that Jesus rose from the grave.  Which, when I write it, actually sounds spooky and cult-like and vaguely cool.  In actuality, it was just you in a benign church meeting room standing in front of a bunch of old farmers wearing their Sunday best and telling them you believed in God.

Well, Annie Lennox and Al Green, I never did that.  So I never officially became a member of my church.  And to this day, even though I went to church a whole bunch as a kid, I’ve never actually taken Communion.  Here’s the thing, Annie Lennox and Al Green, there was a time where I had what I assumed was a bedrock belief in God and Jesus and all that stuff.  And when I’d attend stuff like Bible camp or Vacation Bible School, well, then my belief was whipped up into a fervor.  But then I’d come home, and very quickly I’d find that it’s hard to focus on your belief in Jesus dying for your sins when there are girls to be obsessing about and songs to be taped off the radio.

In the end, it comes down to that I just can’t quite “let go and let God”.  I like the idea of being at one with whatever deity you think created you and trying to do everything He or She or It wants you to do.  But then there’s that new issue of Spider-man that I really want to read.  How to reconcile?

Which brings me back to this song, this song that I love.  I absolutely agree with everything in it.  Thinking of my fellow man.  Lending him a helping hand.  Putting a little love in my heart.  Then I get to work and someone annoys me and I think they’re the biggest jerk in the world and why do they even exist, and poof, all that goodwill is gone in a heartbeat.

So yes, Annie Lennox and Al Green, this is still one of my favorite songs, and it still fills me with happiness every time I hear it.  But it’s also a constant reminder that I’ll never be the person that I know I should be.  So thanks for that.

“Put A Little Love In Your Heart”

Think of your fellow man
Lend him a helping hand
Put a little love in your heart

You see it’s getting late
Oh, please, don’t hesitate
Put a little love in your heart

And the world
Will be a better place
And the wooooorld
Will be a better place
For you

And me

You just wait

And seeee-hee-hee

Another day goes by
And still the children cry
Put a little love in your heart

You want the world to know
We won’t let hatred grow
Put a little love in your heart

And the world (and the world)
Will be a better place
And the wooorld (and the world)
Will be a better place
For you (for you)
And me (and me)
You just wait (just wait)
And seeeee
Wait and seeeeeeeee, oooo-ooooo-oooooo!

Take a good look around (wa-oo)
And if you’re lookin’ down (wa-oo)
Put a little love in your heart (wa-oo)
Yeah yeah! (wa-oo)

I hope when you decide (wa-oo)
Kindness will be your guide (wa-oo)
Put a little love in your heart

And the world (and the world)
Will be a better place (oh, I know it)
And the wooorld (and the world)
Will be a better place
For you (for you)
And me (and me)
You just wait (just wait)
And seeeee
